AFTER making his last delivery, a much-loved Southampton postie has retired after 50 years of service.
Barry Leonard Morse started working as a postman in the summer of June 1972, when he was only 16 years old.
The Bitterne resident followed in the footsteps of his father, who also worked for the Royal Mail.
The 66-year-old told the Echo: "I was lucky that my father got me this job.
"And ever since then, I have never looked back.
“It has been a job for life and all the chaps in the office are great, there's so much friendship in there it’s unbelievable.”
Barry's first delivery was in Shirley, and his last was in Bitterne Manor.
He told how over the years, Southampton has changed.
"I have delivered post in Millbrook, Basset Green, Freemantle, and other parts of the city.
"And over the years, Southampton has changed a hell lot, and the work has become a lot harder."
After half a century of working as a postie, Barry feels “horrible” about leaving.
He said: "People on my deliveries have been so friendly and on my last day, I was being given gifts and tips.
"It was really difficult to say goodbye to them.
"I have met so many people and made many good memories.
“Not many people stay in the same job for 50 years, so it is an achievement I must admit.”
His years of service have also left an imprint on the community.
On social media, a resident wrote: "Barry has looked after Bitterne Manor for years. "Always did way above than his job.
"We will miss him.
"Thank you, Barry."
Barry's last day at work was Saturday, December 31.
And what's next for him after retiring?
Barry laughed and said, "I love bowling at Tenpin bowling alley, so I am looking forward to using my legs again.”
