UNION bosses claim Royal Mail is planning to serve Milton Keynes as well as Coventry from a new combined mail centre.
Mick Kavanagh, Communication Workers' Union branch chairman, said he was told of the plans by union officials in London.
He said it would create a super sorting office serving Coventry, Northampton, and Milton Keynes.
The new twist comes after Royal Mail bosses met union representatives this week and formally rejected suggested locations in Coventry for a replacement depot for Bishop Street, which is due to close.
The suggested sites included the former Peugeot site in Ryton and the Rivet Coventry Building in Waterman Road, Stoke.
Mr Kavanagh claims that, after the meeting, he was informed of Royal Mail's intention, which he believes would explain its desire to move to Northamptonshire.
He said: "It brings a whole new slant on the situation. People in Coventry should be concerned about the quality of service.
"It beggars belief what is going to happen to our members and we will keep the campaign going to keep the mail centre in Coventry."
Depending on the success of a crunch meeting with Royal Mail on Monday, April 28, the union plans to ballot members over strike action.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman declined to comment on the Milton Keynes issue but said: "Our preferred location for the new mail centre remains between junctions 15 and 16 of the M1 in Northamptonshire for strategic, operational and commercial reasons."
