House raiders jailed for 20 years

Fake delivery men who admitted robbing an elderly man of £50,000 were jailed for a total of more than 20 years.

Glaswegians Azeem Sarwaar and Nasir Ahmed, 40, conducted a violent raid on the Cambuslang home of former special constable Hamish Allan, 77, last July.

Two months later Sarwaar, 21, also tried to steal a post van in Hamilton.

Ahmed was jailed for eight years and eight months for assault with intent to rob and conspiracy to rob. Sarwaar was sentenced to 11 years and 11 months.

The pair called at Mr Allan's home and told him they had a delivery.

They then pushed the victim to the ground, held a knife to his back and tied his hands with duct tape.

Sarwaar demanded the code and key to two safes.

Mr Allan later managed to free himself but his £50,000 was never recovered.

Sarwaar then tried to rob a postman of his van in an attack in Lanarkshire, in September.

He pointed a fake gun at his victim and demanded keys to the vehicle.

Judge Lord Brailsford told Sarwaar at the High Court in Edinburgh: "The crimes are if anything the worse because you come from a good and prosperous background.

"You have had a good education and are plainly a person of intelligence.

"How a person of intelligence, having benefited from a good background, comes to commit these crimes is a matter that disappoints and puzzles me."

He jailed Sarwaar for seven years and two months for the attack on Mr Allan and a further four years and nine months for assaulting the postman.

Cache of weapons

The court heard Ahmed also took part in an attack on a man at a house in Shotts, Lanarkshire, in which a bid was made to dupe the resident over changing his gas supplier.

Adam Preston was alone at home when Ahmed called holding a clipboard, but Mr Preston told him he was not interested.

The caller brought out a replica gun but the victim threw a cup of coffee he was holding at him and tried to close the door.

The gunman kicked the door and Mr Preston picked up a mallet.

Ahmed and another man ran off and got into a vehicle, while Mr Preston jumped into his own car and pursued them onto the M8 motorway and rammed the back of Ahmed's car before calling police.

Armed officers in Glasgow stopped a vehicle with Ahmed in it in October.

A cache of weapons were found in the boot, including knives, a machete and a baton with nails sticking out of it, along with gloves and masking tape.

A third man, 21-year-old Brian Orr, from Glasgow, who was also in the car, was jailed for 46 months over conspiracy to rob.
