''Aren't you supposed to be on strike''

Post by Acca Dacca »

Anyone else been inundated with people asking why your not on strike on days we aren’t striking? I’ve tried my hardest in the lead up to these strikes informing as many as I can of the dates but I’m pretty stunned just how many of the people I deliver to think that we are striking everyday until a resolution.

Now I’m just wondering how many of the people I deliver to , who I haven’t had a chance to explain the process to, think I’m a strikebreaker!
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Yeah so many people don't know how strikes actually work.

They seem to think a "Union Baron" just tells you to walk out, and off you go until you're told to go back, or something. No awareness of the rigorous legal and democratic processes.

Many years of reading the Mail, Sun and Telegraph will do that to a person.

Believe it or not I’ve got customers who think we still get paid when we strike

I couldn't care less what people think. I don't have time to stand and explain what days we are on strike, if they think I'm a strike-breaker then so be it. Most of them are wrapped up in their own world and don't care that much anyway. Yes, I'm a cynical old git.

Ha someone came up to our picket line to talk and couldn’t believe it when she found out we’re not being paid!

If there’s anything this job has taught me; it’s that there’s a large percentage of the public that are really quite thick. Most of them don’t have a clue how the world works on even the most basic level. They operate in their own little one-dimensional bubbles, oblivious to those around them - only concern being themselves.

When I was on the picket line, I couldn't believe how many people drove across ours to get their parcels. Just shows how little people care about us. People are so detached from the real world. :no no

So, your Callers Office was open? Staffed by a manager or a strike breaker?

No it wasn't. But many didn't realise until they had driven through the gates and even tried the door. Some turned around after chatting to us. Most were in favour of us. Our office doesn't have a high profile position, it's not on a main road, so not many drive past apart from those heading to or from work, there's some apartments around the back.

Why, what would you have expected, a round of applause from the public or even a general reluctance to cross the picket line?
If you expected anything more then maybe it's you who's detached from the real world?

Much like most of the staff that have only ever worked at Royal Mail.

Stop to ask if the callers office was open perhaps?

If he breaks the rules we will. But we don't remove members just because they have a different view. An echo chamber is far more destructive than an open discussion.
