Minor Vehicle Repairs/Maintenance – RTD Agreement

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

No. 283/08

Date: 10th April 2008

For The Urgent Attention Of All Postal Branches With Professional Drivers

Dear Colleague

Minor Vehicle Repairs/Maintenance – RTD Agreement

The department has received a number of enquiries regarding Driver Coaches carrying out minor vehicle repairs / maintenance outside of the examples given in Para 5.6 of the Generic Agreement of the RTD Agreement.

The information we have received is that managers are briefing, and have requested, that individuals perform certain tasks that are out with the National agreement and are claiming that these new tasks have been agreed with the CWU Nationally.

The purpose of this LTB is to clarify that there is no National agreement to carry out tasks other than those described in the RTD Agreement and that we are extremely concerned that individuals are being asked to change mirrors, wipers, cables and in some circumstances bulbs, which would require the actual tilting of the cab. Against that backdrop we have requested that a Joint Working Party be established to provide greater clarity as to what does and does not fall under the category of minor vehicle repair/maintenance. However, until those discussions have taken place and been concluded and we do have clear agreed guidelines, which ensure safe working practices and no misinterpretation of roles and responsibilities, then the current RTD Agreement holds the field.

Representatives dealing with this issue locally should make the above advice clear to local management and at the same time ensure that the department at CWU Headquarters is aware of their situation.

Branches are requested to ensure that our representatives and members are made aware of the contents of this LTB as a matter of urgency.

Any enquiries should be addressed to Terry Pullinger, Assistant Secretary, email dwyatt@cwu.org, quoting reference 201.
