Barry nominated for national award

AN INTREPID Lealholm postie whose fund-raising feats have included jumping out of a plane and trekking along the Great Wall of China for charity has won an award for his efforts.
Not content with putting his feet up and letting others do the work, Barry Hutchinson (34) of Wilks Farm has spent the past few years raising more than £8,000 for many worthy causes including the RNIB and Epilepsy Action.

Now, the daring postman has been announced as one of the regional winners in Royal Mail’s First Class People Awards for his dedicated efforts in helping others.

Barry took delivery of £500 cash for winning the regional round and is one of three winners put forward to represent Yorkshire, the North East and North Lincolnshire in the national final on 31 March in London.

If he beats off other posties from the rest of the country to be named the nation’s Postie of the Year, he will be in line for a £2,000 family holiday and £1,000 spending money.

Barry’s bravery has meant he has been able to abseil on a number of different occasions to raise money for various charities and in November 2006, he plunged from a plane through the skies in a tandem 10,000ft parachute jump.

He has also pulled on his running shoes to complete the Great North Run to raise money for Hawsker Primary School, scaled 4,409ft up Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain and spent a gruelling eleven days tre
kking along the Great Wall of China.

But Barry’s efforts don’t stop there – in May this year he plans to walk the Inca Trail in Peru, South America, to raise £2,900 for Scope.

Barry said: “I’m not even sure who nominated me for this award.

“I just raise money because it’s something for me to do and it helps other people. I get something out of this too.â€

It does make you wonder if any of these shiny happy people who grace the pages of the propaganda rag & get put forward for these awards actually did support the strike?
There's one in our office, actively involved in charity work, fine upstanding member of the community.... never went out on one strike day & is the ringleader of the bullies in our office.

Perhaps you should encourage him to do his skydiving much more frequently
