I'll health & Medical retirement.

Post by riverdale »

Have left the business Dec last year on Ill Heath retirement, due to Covid 19. have received lump sum and all monies owed. But
have appealed the decision to go for Medical retirement. I have had only a couple of letters that the union have sent to the appropriate Manager, with no response. It’s been 6 months now !
I understand that Medical retirement means you get half pay for 3years,then medically assessed then you maybe get a lump sum if you still can’t work . You can’t work anywhere for 10 years or until your normal retirement age, whichever comes first.
What is Royal Mails Normal Retirement Age?

67??????? LOL

RM hasn't got a set retirement age and nor should any other company in the uk, as it would be against the law.

The half pay thing is not exactly what it sounds like. You will get half pay but it's made up of ESA and then the company will top it up to half pay. No good for me as my savings would have made me ineligible for ESA so I took the lump sum.

I was quoting the normal state pension retirement age which most people generally follow even those in RM.

Maybe you missed that in your attempt to insert a LOL and a few question marks.

Was it Income Based ESA or Contribution Based ESA that you applied for?

I know Income Based ESA has a savings limit but Contribution Based ESA doesn't.

But you answered the question 'what is royal mail's normal retirement age'. :hmmmm :hmmmm :hmmmm :hmmmm
SPA is currently 66 and wont increase to 67 until 2028. It's also planned to increase to 68 in due course and possibly higher in the future.
That will effect people differently.
So perhaps you're actually just basing things on your own age and situation??????

I haven't applied for Contribution Based ESA yet bit I understand it's for one year only.

1 year yes. Depending on your circumstances there's also an additional payment added to it if you are unable to work due to medical reasons. If you qualify for this then your ESA payments can continue for longer than the usual 12 months. I questioned it myself when I was informed mine were continuing and they just said you're assessed every 6 months and the payments continue till you are assessed to be fit to work again. It is worth applying for.

If you do apply you can also get your ESA back dated which I did.

Just to clarify state pension ages:

Anyone reaching SPA today will be aged 66, which has been the case since October 2020.

SPA is due to increase to 67 between 2026 and 2028.

Current law states the increase from 67 to 68 is due between 2044 and 2046, but a review a few years ago suggested it could happen earlier. That could be between 2037 and 2039, or possibly earlier.

There may also be increases beyond 68.

The government has said any future changes to SPA will be announced at least 10 years in advance.

The majority wouldn't survive working in RM working until they are 68 at least not in delivery offices. Personally I feel if I reach 60 in this business I will be lucky and will be a shadow of myself if I reach that point. RM just uses its staff then spits them out so I would not recommend working for RM to anyone.

its all very well the government deciding to just increase retirement age at the drop of a hat. but its not just posties who have physical jobs. how are all the people who have physical jobs going to carry on working with rules that could eventually take people into their 70s. Fireman/women, roofers, roadworkers, scaffolders etc. we wont all be able to walk into desk jobs.

There's plenty of other jobs that are less physical than the one's you mention.

The days of gold plated final salary pension schemes are long gone, particularly for the younger generation, and pension auto-enrolment was introduced back in 2012 to encourage people to save more instead of relying on the state.

Raising the state pension age isn't good for anybody except the Treasury.
The longer we're in work, the longer we're likely to be paying tax! And the higher the State Pension Age, the less time it's likely to be paid out, although that obviously depends on life expectancy!

SPA is just when you can claim your state pension – you can retire any time you want or can afford to.
Assuming you qualify for the full rate, the state pension currently pays out about £9,300 per year.

The ball is firmly in the court of the individual to make sure they don't have to work into their 70's!
