Compassionate leave

Post by TheStrangler »

If you're off sick and a close relative passes away during that absence would you be entitled to compassionate leave days after your return to work? If so how many days?
If not is there any point in me telling my manager if I'm off sick anyway?
Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

There is no hard and fast rule, each case is different. I was on annual leave and my father died. I rang the manager and he said to continue the leave and then add on companionate leave at the end.

My best advice is to call the manager and be open and honest with them, they may surprise you.

However the entitlement for compassionate leave does depend on some extent as to the relationship of the deceased. If its a father or Mother (or you are the executor) you get 7 days. Anyone else I think you get 1 day and maybe a day off for the funeral.

Check out Special Leave in the downloads section for accuracy.

It's my mum that has passed away but I'm currently on sick leave.
I'll likely still be on sick leave when the funeral happens anyway but just wondered if I should tell manager/union anyway or say nothing and just deal with it.
Thank you.
