A COUNCILLOR is outraged over reports of a postal worker in the city being spat on while doing their job.
The unnamed Royal Mail employee - classified as a ‘key worker’ under the current Government lockdown measures - was delivering mail on Saturday when the alleged attack took place.
Now, Worcester city councillor Richard Udall is calling for management to offer their staff greater protection from such attacks.
Mr Udall said: “This was a despicable act, made worse by the current coronavirus outbreak, but it is clearly not acceptable at any time.
“However, I know many postal workers will continue to ignore incidents such as this and will keep the service going, but I call upon Royal Mail management to offer more protection to their employees, to ensure they have personal protective equipment and to better support them when incidents like this happen.
“The person who did this is clearly nasty, spiteful and disgusting - I hope they get caught and severely punished for their criminal behaviour.
“I wish to pay tribute to all postal workers, who along with all other key workers, are keeping essential services going, they deserve our thanks, gratitude and respect.”
“Postal workers are doing a great job, keeping lines of communication open and ensuring we can still get our mail.”
The NHS state on its website that the risk of “serious infection” from coronavirus from saliva is “low” but to wash the area immediately.
We reported last month, after numerous incidents from around the country, that emergency workers and vulnerable people were being coughed at by people claiming to have the virus - the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) warned those responsible will face serious criminal charges.
Royal Mail was not available for comment as we went to press but on its website it states the “postal service is a key part of the UK’s infrastructure” and “the delivery of parcels and letters is a way of keeping the country together.”
The postal service provider also said: “We will continue providing the best delivery service for you and protect the health of our people, and our customers.
“We have provided guidance to our people to help prevent the spread of any infection.”
