A mum of bouncing baby twins received a special delivery after she poured her heart out to a postwoman in Gloucester.

Beth Medlicott, mum of one-year-old twins Winnie and Floss, was distraught at not having any Calpol or other medication to help her baby girls feel better after they were struck down with a cough.

But her plea was heard by Gloucester postwoman Vicky Field who went above and beyond by delivering a bottle of Calpol after her round had finished, to help the mum and her poorly, premature born daughters get a good night’s sleep.

Beth, 31, of Hardwicke, said: “I was having a cry to myself when my postie came to the door - my premature twins have got lung disease, and both have a heavy cold with the most awful chesty cough.

"I had been trying to get some Calpol or cough products or anything to help them but couldn’t find anything and this along with the worry of everything has been getting me down. Anyway, I spilled all this out to our postwoman, Vicky, who later messaged me to say that she had got me a bottle!

"She drove to my house after her working hours to drop it off so that we could hopefully get some sleep! It was such a kind gesture. She is always very good but really made my day and restored my faith in humanity! She really deserves some praise."

Postwoman Vicky Field said: “I had just been feeling frustrated myself with seeing supermarket shelves empty, so I knew just how Beth was feeling.

"It was a real team effort to get a bottle of Calpol – my colleagues back in the Gloucester South Delivery Office managed to help find one, as did my friends in the horse community I belong to. I was so glad I could help the family get a good night’s sleep."

Shane O’Riordain, Royal Mail Managing Director of Regulation and Corporate Affairs said: “Royal Mail remains open for business. The postal service is a key part of the UK’s infrastructure. In line with Government guidance, online retail is still open and encouraged and postal and delivery services will run as normal.

“We are proud of the part our postmen and women play in the community. We understand the important role we have to play in helping people to stay connected. We are working hard to deliver the UK’s mail. The mail is still scheduled to be collected and delivered as normal. This is a fast-moving situation and local service levels may at times be impacted by local absences.

“The delivery of parcels and letters is a way of keeping the country together, businesses operating, and helping many people who may not have the option to leave their homes. We continue to work hard to collect, process and deliver as much mail and parcels as possible in difficult circumstances.

“Public health authorities have advised people receiving parcels are not at risk of contracting coronavirus. From experience with other coronaviruses, we know that these types of viruses don’t survive long on objects, such as letters or parcels. This complements the highly publicised guidance from public health authorities for people to wash their hands more often than usual using soap and hot water.”
