Bluetooth in new vans

Rumours that a dismissal has been upheld, where the OPG connected their mobile to one of the new vans audio via bluetooth.
The company policy is zero tolerance to the use of mobiles whilst driving.
Is this true?
Could the OPG's phone have connected automatically?

If they know the time of the call and your PDA actuals show you were in motion . . .

This does seem unlikely to me unless there is some kind of corroborating evidence. It also seems unlikely that the phone connected automatically, usually you need to pair a new device before connecting.

No.

I have it in my car. You have to set up a link code from the car to the phone, after that initial process it then links automatically. So for it to link the OPG had to at some point in the past, set it up to link automatically.

Originally connected it when the van was stationary (when cleaning the van) the it automatically connected :-)

Have they been told that they are not allowed to connect their phone?

Bluetooth? I've got a phone that's got actual buttons that you have to press (although 2 have fallen off and I need to use a pen to press them)

Just don't use it regardless of whether it's legal or not,it's the same as the seatbelt rule, if RM say don't use a phone whilst driving or you must wear your seatbelt whilst driving our vans then do as they say,end of.

After a member of the public reported seeing one of our drivers on the phone last week, an announcement was made on the shop floor that even the use of hands-free devices was not allowed and could lead to conduct/dismissal if anybody was caught using a phone while driving.

Surely you could listen to your own music whilst on a break or just driving in the van on a collection etc. As long as you are not touching your phone and being distracted then I can't see you can be dismissed for connecting your phone to the bluetooth. We don;t have any vans in our DO that have such luxuries. Probably only half have electric windows. It seems a little overkill IMO. Is this another desperate measure to cull the workforce of older style contracts? If they are that killswitch then maybe they should just disconnect all radios etc from all vans. Problem solved, don't sack people when you provide such devices to be used.... it's like putting on a buffet for staff and then expecting people not to eat anything. It's just bloody stupid!!

iirc in another thread a while back it was mentioned that apart from the radio that's built into a van, no devices are allowed to be used in the van when driving
