The Voice : Mediation succeeding at Royal Mail

Joint mediation work between the CWU and Royal Mail is “going from strength to strength” according to Postal Executive member Katrina Quirke, who leads for the union on this initiative.

“Agreements reached in both the IR, Bully and Harassment and Grievance categories are running at over 90 per cent of cases and the national mediation team are doing a great job,” she tells The Voice.

Initially set up in 2014 as part of the Agenda for Growth national agreement, the national mediation initiative is also a
major component of the culture change that is a central theme of the current Four Pillars agreement.

The seven mediators are all trained volunteers and are Royal Mail employees on full-time secondment. Four of the seven have been CWU representatives and the other three are from a management background.

“It was great to hear from two members of the mediation team – Sophie Bell from Warrington Mail Centre Branch and Greater Manchester Branch’s Jonathan Statham – at Annual Conference back in April,” Katrina continued, adding that “the feedback we’ve been getting from people involved in the mediations – as ‘parties’ – has also been very positive, with 63 per cent expressing themselves as ‘very satisfied’ with their outcomes.”
