Part timer doing overtime constantly, being told i cant get bigger contract. where do i stand?
I am on 20 hours a week, I have been doing around 30 hours a week for the past 4 years. I recently discovered that if you are doing overtime consistently, your contract should be made up to reflect the hours you actually do.
My manager doesn't want to hear it, so I went through the union, after months of 'we are busy but will get to you soon' emails, my rep had a chat with my manager and said that no I have to stay on 20hours a week.
Can they do this?

This issue has been the bug bearer for most of the P/T staff.trevjim wrote:I am on 20 hours a week, I have been doing around 30 hours a week for the past 4 years. I recently discovered that if you are doing overtime consistently, your contract should be made up to reflect the hours you actually do.

The agreement for Agenda & Growth & Stability was supposed to recognise this by adjusting P/T contracts to reflect the hours being reguraly complected on a 6 month basis by CWU and RM but in majority of cases this did not happen.
The latest agreement which is about to go to voting stage is accepted then this issue is on the agenda for being addressed.
We live in hope.

Refuse to go over your contract hours. Start with every Wednesday.

Who told you that? It is totally incorrect.
Improved (ie more hours) contracts are offered in seniority, it has nothing to do with how much overtime you personally work.
Where an office works a lot of overtime, it shows that hours can be added to the office in the form of improved contracts. These contracts are offered on seniority.
The people who work the overtime aren't necessarily the ones who get offered more hours.

It's not the person that gets made up, it's the duty.
And only if that duty constantly has hrs added to it for it to be done properly.
Then if it happens, the duty then goes up for signing like normal and the most senior (full-timer or part-timer)who wants it gets it.
If the duty is regularly fooked, then the rep needs to take it further and not be fooked off by the manager.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Stop doing the overtime.
I know money is always an issue. But if P/T merrs stopped doing it more of them would get their hours made up

Totally agree, but trouble is, unless it's a united effort, it won't work.enskied wrote:Stop doing the overtime.

One part timer refuses the overtime, the manager doesn't have to travel far to find someone else who will do it. All the original part timer gains is less money the following week and the possibility of looking like an awkward bugger to management.
Sooner or later, a beat dog bites.

Depends if you can manage financially without overtime, which is a personal thing,if so speak to your rep to get backing to say to management you are only prepared to work the hours your contract gives you, choice is theirs, increase your contracted hours or pay whatever it costs to cover what you can't do,am sure you won't be alone in your office feeling the same pressures

In our DO when posties have been made up to full time hours it has been the postie in question and not the walk. I think you need to have an effective local union rep otherwise the changes are not made.POSTMAN wrote:It's not the person that gets made up, it's the duty.

P/T workers were meant to be looked after in such cases get in touch with one of the top union leaders and ask for their help your rep may not have the clout.
