Fury over post box blunder

BUNGLING postmen left a postbox unlocked all weekend - putting the security of residents at risk.

The box on the corner of Brinton Road and Loxley Avenue was apparently slammed shut after the last post was collected around midday on Saturday, however the latch failed to lock properly and the door was later found swinging open with post inside.

Resident Tony Robbins, who contacted the Solihull News, said this is not the first time it has happened. "This year it has happened about six times," he said. "I've lived here for 27 years and I've known it happen lots of times before and I've always slammed it shut.

"They slam it shut and don't bother to check if it has locked," said the 66-year-old. "You can pull letters right out. I'm all right because everytime I put letters in I check it and slam it shut, but the last couple of times I've complained," added the retired plumber.

Mr Robbins called the Post Office and went to the local sorting office, but by Wednesday it still hadn't been shut properly.

And with Christmas coming many letters may well contain gifts or vouchers.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail, said: "I would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention, The security of mail is important to us and we've arranged for our engineers to visit the box today [Wednesday] to ensure it's in good working order. Our collections officers will be reminded of the need to check the box is secured correctly following collections."

What member of the public would see an open post box, put their mail in it and then complain that it's open.

He was latching it properly first.

He did say, that when he was Posting letters, he made sure it was latched properly first. His complaint was that he was having to do so, and that the last couple of times, he complained, and no-one else latched it for him.

Why did it take more than one complaint to get the Box repaired?!?!
That's what I'd like to know.

Sounds like a faulty box rather than a incompetent postal worker !

Exactly.

That's right. Why didn't RM get the Box repaired after the first complaint, instead of waiting for further ones?

Nor is the local unit a "sorting office".

A picture of a postbox unlocked, and a tweet is not a news article, it would have been better posted in Blue Shirts
