Is there anyway of making the payments lower? Has anyone had any experience currently awaiting I’ll health retirement and really struggling money wise can barely afford to live at the moment

Two ways. Send them a letter explaining how you’re experiencing difficulties in managing finances and to ask for either a lower amount, or a payment break say 3 months?
Another way is to get a Debt relief order or bankruptcy but you won’t wanna do that
