Danger! Tory proposals would hit workers health and safety protection and confront the EU

2007 saw a series of dramatic attacks on health and safety at work rights by the opposition Tory Party, signalling a serious warning to workers about what would be in store if we were ever unfortunate enough to see the return of a Tory Government under David Cameron's leadership.

John Redwood, the right-wing, Thatcherite former cabinet minister who is heading the Conservative Party's Economic Competitiveness Policy Review group published an extreme package of proposals in August that would hit working people, entitled "Freeing Britain to Compete". At the heart of this major Tory policy review, welcomed by party leader David Cameron, were a series of proposals aimed at loosening health and safety regulations and scrapping key legislation imposed by Parliament and Brussels, none of which could be implemented without breaching current EU legal requirements and could only be implemented by leaving the EU and would be unlikely to achieve the savings claimed according to an analysis published by the TUC.

The Proposals recommend a repeal of the Working Time Regulations, the UK to opt-out from Europe's Social Chapter, a Watering-Down of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations to weaken the "Risk Assessment" requirements placed on employers and a review of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The report further claims that the inspection regime has no sense of proportion and “fails to consider business implicationsâ€

Allow me, Dave................ Well, although they share the same ideals, an end to all public services, everyone at the mercy of "market forces", and also share a distain of the ordinary working Man and Woman, the main difference between both sets of cnuts, is for some reason best known to themselves, the fact they sit opposite each other in the chamber of horrors, better known to you and me as the House of Commons. Other than that, I cannot say. :Very Happy

there's been a few good articles on http://www.ft.com

the url's are a nightmare to link especially on Safari 3 , Basically it's New Labour sounding more like the CBI& the usual New Labour conflicting agendas & lack of joined up thinking , I filed one dated 03/12 entitled "Brown set for EU Showdown on Temps "

It's not the sort of paper I'd have delivered but on a fairly factual basis , it has it's uses .

As for the CWU article , I've had to work in that industry as a guard and as a agency labourer in the Major years , nearly ended up in hospital working in what was a indoor building site with dry rot , rising damp, plaster , brick & cement dust ; and yes I couldn't agree more about "relaxed " H&S, had to threaten the Security Firm with the HSE & Env Health when ill , it was "amazing ' how their attitude suddenly changed .

I'm under no illusions how the likes of Redwood & Cameron would like to turn the clock back to the dark ages , but unfortunately it's too tiresome reading all this New Labour twaddle about them not being as nasty as the tories and we've to be eternally grateful that they're in power & all this if your not for us you're for the Tories rubbish .

There's a many a true word in cliches .

These sort of people don't really believe in or are for anything bar being anti Tory , just professonial oppositionalists stuck in a 90's time warp . Sorry guys but it's not 1997 anymore and we are allowed to criticise New Labour .

Cameron also wants us to vote every year on retaing the levy, what a bloody waste of mbrs money that would be. As long as mbrs are fully awae they can opt in and out when ever they want to then the need to ballot every 10 years should be scrapped.

The hayden philips rewiew recomends scrapping the 10 year ballot. Cameron is attacking the unions but dosent realise or care his proposals would waste the subs of hardworking CWU members all over the country.

Cameron needs to be exposed as the anti worker person he is!

Trouble is, too many posties are lifers, and all they've ever known is the "big bad Post Office".
Having worked in the real world of industry where H&S is an important issue (unlike RM where H&S is more concerned with trivia) and experienced life in that world under the Thatcher-bitch, I have absolutely no wish to return to those unhappy days.
Still, let's all happily trot out the same old trite cliches about all parties being the same, and look forward to those happy times to come under the Tories.
They're not even close to forming a government, and yet the anti-union and anti-H&S rhetoric has started already.
So how much warning do the sheep amongst us actually need?

I don't! You would have to be seriously deranged to still be paying into the political fund after the last ten years under this shower. Not that life would be much different under the Tories. The sleaze, deterioration of working conditions, running down of health, education and transport and senseless wars would continue much as they do under Labour. The only difference is dead heads imagine such things are more acceptable when the Labour Party are carrying them out, whereas growing numbers of people with their eyes open realise they are not.
