Light duties?

Hi, I'm off at the moment with a broken left wrist,( I am left handed), can i be forced to return to work on light duties?.

i'd say yes but by the sounds you'll not be much use. could get you sorting or prepping walks but it would be obviously slow

Hi , Thanks for the reply, the reason I ask is there have been other people in my office with broken arms etc., who have been off for months, I wondered why I was being singled out for special treatment!....Or have the rules changed, the thought of being stuck inside struggling with my right hand for a month quite depressing!.....

i broke my wrist many years ago and was willing to go in on light duties as was bored shitless at home but my dom wouldnt allow it for fear of me slipping over or something similar and making the problem even worse.

depends if you have a hard cast on - AFAIK you cannot work in a hard cast - a support cast you can

I would also imagine there is quite a lot of extra indoor work this time of year which might not be available at other times

Hi all - thanks for your advice so far.
perhaps i should add that this injury occurred while cycling into work at the beginning of last week.
i went to casualty, which the managers were not happy with me doing in the first place and when i returned to the office in a sling and a plaster cast at around 8.30 they wanted me to stay on to do light duties then.
as i was in quite a bit of pain and had been told by the hospital not to anything until i have been to the fracture clinic which is happening next week i made the decision to go home myself. i had to walk home, with my coat half on, and i was not even offered a lift home.
i spoke to the office to keep them in the picture on thursday and they still wanted me to come in on light duties next monday, which is against the advice given by the hospital. i feel i am being bullied to try to make me go in.
Is there any union official here who can advise me of my rights please?

Ask for a referral to OHS, OHS won't take it up until the cast is off, you shouldn't be anywhere near work, this is solely about manipulating absence figures your welfare is no concern to them.

Have you seen a consultant yet? The business won't challenge fit notes from consultants, they can challenge GPs opinions

Speak to your area rep, let him take it up with the DSM (who is probably the driving force of manipulating absence figures).

Be firm with them, follow medical advice (which is part of the attendance procedure), stay away from work and enjoy your Christmas.
