Of course it’s unacceptable for Angard staff who have been offered a shift to not turn up for it. That shift could have gone to someone who was desperate for a shift, and - especially in busy times and smaller MCs/offices - their non-attendance has an impact on the centre’s performance.
Angard’s policy states that you must give two hours notice if you need to cancel a shift, to avoid being marked down as a no-show. Personally I don’t accept a shift unless I know I can do it, but it’s the real world and things happen. You may be fine at midday when a night shift is offered but become poorly as the day/evening progresses.
On two occasions I have cancelled a booked shift. Once at around 3.30pm for a 10pm start, and once at about 8pm for 11pm start. On both occasions my name was not removed from the sheet for that day and I was marked as “no show” despite following procedures. I appreciate the second cancellation was short notice (but still adhering to the laid-down procedure) but surely between 3pm and 10pm an effort should have been taken to find a replacement and remove my name from the sheet.
The moral is of course to not book in too far in advance if there’s a chance of falling ill but that requires a bit of psychism I don’t possess. And with “first come first served” shifts you tend to snap them up given the chance. There’s a “three strikes and you’re out” policy so one more cock-up (even if Angard’s fault) could mean my contract is terminated.

If ever you can't make it just email the general Angard employee address. You can always try ringing as well to let them know if it's short notice because they are pretty slow sometimes to see a an email. That way you've got it on record what time you informed them. I've tried to ring in sick a couple of times and I gave it a maximum of two minutes without an answer before I just emailed them. Both times my name wasn't removed from the list so RM wondered where I was but nothing mentioned by Angard.

Well, the issue is that some mail centres insist on having the night shift “sheet of names” by early afternoon. So even if you follow procedures and cancel up to six hours in advance, as far as RM management are concerned you’re a “no show” as your name is on their list!

"no shows" works both ways
Last week it was endemic for people to turn up for pre-booked shifts and find no shift available
No cancellations of shifts had been made
It happened Mon-thurs nights last week
It happened to me 3 times - each time there was at least 2 people and other times 3 left with no work
Luckily I only had to go home once with other work being available either via no-shows or unexpected extra work
On contacting Angard for the shift I was sent home I was told "I forgot you were booked..."
