Reaching agreement
We can't afford to give customers reason to say 'no' to Royal Mail
In 2009, around 75% of our customers only used Royal Mail for delivering letters and parcels. Today, less than 40% of customers only use Royal Mail for their deliveries.
In just eight years, the number of business customers only using us has almost halved.
Business mail accounts for around half of mail we handle. It’s really important we don’t give companies like banks reason not to choose letters.
Stephen Agar, managing director consumer and network access, said: ‘We’re facing a lot of hard work to keep people into letters.
‘Once they lose confidence that letters will be delivered, they’ll look for alternatives. We may not get that business back. E-substitution will take even more traffic away.’

We remain actively committed to negotiations with the CWU. Yesterday, 10 mini town halls were held across the country. A frontline manager briefing session also took place in London.
We want to reach agreement. We have the best jobs in the industry. Let’s keep it that way.

Times have changed
We are actively engaging. We want to reach agreement as soon as possible
This week’s special edition RMtv focuses on how times have changed and what this mean for our letters and parcels customers.
Only last week, a well-known online retailing website reported: ‘Consumers don’t want strikes. Online retailers will simply take their business to alternative providers where they can and probably never return. Royal Mail’s business and reputation will be in tatters.’
Let’s look at what that means for our customers:
- Years ago, if we lost traffic, it would probably come back to us. Customers had no choice. They had to use Royal Mail. Unfortunately, that’s just no longer the case.
In 2009, around 75% of our customers ONLY used Royal Mail for delivering letters and parcels. Today, less than 40% of customers – big and small - ONLY use Royal Mail for their deliveries. In just eight years, the number of our business customers ONLY using us has almost halved.
We just cannot afford to give customers a reason to say no to Royal Mail.
Rest assured, Royal Mail is very committed to negotiations with the CWU. Very senior managers from across the business have been discussing a number of issues with the union and we will continue to engage in the talks.
