Stranded Hours

Post by fixxxer85 »

Hi I was wondering if anybody knew about stranded hours?

My line manager recently came to me and told me that since i signed for my float i havent been doing my stranded hour. This, according to him should be an extra hr per week to compensate for the time i actually dont work.

He said that i now owe him 12 hours since i have not been performing the stranded hr since i signed for the duty. There are also others in the office that have also not been performing these stranded hours.

my question is: can they make me pay back the hours even though they have failed to recognise/tell me that i needed to perform this extra hr? Also should this extra hr be scheduled or agreed ad hoc?

my colleague has told me that the managers were aware of these stranded hrs nearly a year ago, but did nothing to compensate. Others have been on their duties longer than me as well so they also owe a lot of extra hours.

Any advice is appreciated before i want to actually agree anything with them.

Thanks

Never heard of stranded hours.

However, if there are more than one of you affected then you need to act as a group. Get Union members to meet (and non-members to join) then get the rep to contact the Area Delivery rep and enter a disagreement, or even a flash point.

You may end up owing hours, you may not. But I think the manager is chancing his arm over your ignorance to agreements and procedures and as its a technical issue it will need a Full Time release rep to deal with.

as far as I know stranded hours are when say a 32 hour person picks a 31 hour duty on a re pick but does not have to drop hours - however in this case they do have to work the 32 hours ( for example) they are paid for

Is this the situation?

Basically I am on a 24 hr contract and i work across 3 days. In our office mon and tues are 7.00-2.20 and wed-sat are 7-3.

So if i work a mon, tues, fri for example i would work 22.40, 1.20 less than my contract. On the next week i will work a tues, fri, sat, so 40 mins less than contract. Over 2 weeks it makes two hrs i am not working. So Local agreement says I should have 1 hr per week where i do ips/prep in the morning to 'make up' my hrs. We call it 'stranded' in our office, lapse maybe a better word.

The same applies to a 32 1/2 hr contract over 4 days, even though technically that works out at an 1 1/2 they should make up a week. The managers did used to schedule these hrs but nothing has been up for a while and it wasnt advertised on the duty when signed for.

If I and others have to work or pay back the hours then so be it, but id rather not of course, tbh i completly forgot about it and so did the managers(apparently).

To me this a manager problem, if they can't organize an hours work over the week then thats their problem. I cannot see how they think they can claw it back either. I'd contact your area rep and get this sorted pretty smartish.

Did they allocate any extra duty for you? No
Did you refuse at any point? No
Where you available? Yes
Did you daily do as instructed? Yes

No banking of hours!
