Shouldn't this duty have been advertised?

Post by wannabeek »

Probably a simple question to those in the know. A part time duty gets a whole extra row added to it from a new housing development and it becomes a full time duty, so the person on it (has been on it years) gets their hours increased and becomes a full-timer with a fixed round. Doesn't it constitute a major change to the duty, therefore others should have been allowed to have applied for it?

Bit fed up that the only full time positions ever to be advertised are only truly stinky floats, yet someone seems to have got a full time fixed round thru the back door, in my opinion!

What happens if the office vote for a repick, then presumably that person wouldn't have the seniority for a FT duty?

We've discussed this situation before, I'm sure greater minds than mine may be able to provide a link. I believe that the Duty should have been advertised, within the Office.

Initially as it's now a Full Time Duty it should have been offered to the other Full Time Posties in the Office and, they could pick it on a seniority basis. That would then leave that Posties Duty open for advertising, and so on. The made up Part Timer would then end up picking up another duty, depending on his seniority within the office (and I believe that's TOTAL time with RM not just the Full Time element).

This sort of thing happens a lot. In my experience it normally happens when there's a couple of the DOMs favourites and he just slips them into cushy Full Time Duties. :no no If you get no joy I'd mention it to the Unit CWU Rep and then get onto the Area Rep. Good Luck! :thumbup

I think it's highly unlikely that the office would vote for a Repick Norm. It appears that only the one duty is involved. I expect that most of them would take the attitude of "I'm alright Jack"! :cuppa

Yes, it's just one duty involved and realistically it's really only me that's likely to be miffed about the situation out of nearly 100, only found out thru the grapevine long after all been decided. Tempted to just let it go rather than be the sour grapes in the room. Ho hum.

If you fancy a try at the Duty I'd go for it. We normally end up going straight to the Area Rep if we want anything done, as our Unit Rep can't be arsed (unless it effects him) :no no

My Opinion is that if there's a set of rules, or guidelines, set out by RM then we should ALL abide by them. It's not good enough for DOMs to pick and choose when it suits them. We recently had a similiar case with several Duties that had just been quietly "Given" to a few of the DOMs favourites. :no no Area Rep told the DOM they should all have been advertised within the office, within 6 months of becoming available. :thumbup Some of the "Chosen Few" had a good grizzle and managed to hang on to them, with the help of our Unit Rep (who chose to get his finger out on this occasion..... Unfortunately) but several of our colleagues managed to get a regular duty. So I consider it a worthwhile exercise. Like I said it just keeps the management "Honest"! :cuppa
