Photographs must be submitted in digital form by midnight on October 2, 2016.
Calling all budding photographers! The CWU’s education & training department is once again running a digital photography competition with a top prize of £200 for the overall winner.
The competition has consistently attracted a high standard of entries, with the 2014 winner - postman David Gibbon from Durham - going on to reach the finals of the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
Last year’s winner was Paul Fine of Plymouth Mail Centre, whose captivating image of an elderly woman lighting up a cigarette in a Borneo marketplace (pictured) became the first entry to be selected for the top prize by a national poll of members visiting an online gallery of the shortlisted entries.
This year the same mass-voting mechanism will be used to select the overall winner of the 2016 competition, and it is hoped that over the coming months even more competition hopefuls will sign up to the CWU’s ‘No Nonsense Guide to Digital Photography’, which was launched last year and which is accessible online (see details below).
CWU head of education & training, Trish Lavelle, explains: "The digital photography competition is part of our informal learning project and is open to all CWU members and their families.
"Our learning reps have enabled hundreds of our members to undertake digital photography and Photoshop courses in recent years. The opportunities offered by mobile and smart phones mean that many of our members have a digital camera in their pocket to record the world around them so you don't need expensive specialist kit to take part - just a good eye for a picture and a bit of luck in catching the right shot.”
The ‘No Nonsense Guide to Digital Photography’ offers a welter of practical advice, aimed not simply at those who are just starting out - but right through to those who are considering moving to the next level of photographic sophistication with an advanced SLR camera.
The guide is available on the education and training department’s e-learning platform, CWU Left Click http://www.cwu.org/leftclick" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - where the CWU Camera Collective provides further practical advice and assistance for those looking to hone their digital photography skills.
“This is a space for people to share skills, ideas and resources amongst a group of like-minded enthusiasts,” explains CWU national project manager Paul Dovey.
“This year we’ve added a tutorial in Photoshop and others from the Cooperative of Photography, and some of our members have been kind enough to share their photo galleries with us. Others have agreed to write some ‘how-to’ guides which we will be uploading as the area develops.
“We’ve developed a wonderful community of photographers within the CWU, and this is a resource that will grow over time.”
