Grand father rights

Have recently been informed by my line manager that I am no longer entitled to what were the old night time allowances which were phased out but I have been receiving them as "grand father" rights. I've been told that they cease after 3 years- is that right? Consequently I am now told by the pay office that I have to repay them the overpay. Surely I would have been notified by the pay office when the 3 years were up. I was under the impression that I would receive the payment until I retired. Has there been a new agreement that I should have been told about- which would have saved all this hassle?

Are you talking about the £ 6.00 driving allowance

No. it was the early shift allowance. I was told that being over 50 I would retain them.
