My office is currently voting on our proposed new duty patterns
We had a union meeting where the local reps were pushing everyone towards keeping the current duty pattern even though they admitted it means that no part timer will ever be made full time again ever ( you read that right)
Meanwhile the reps from further afield were pushing the option which gave some part timers the option to be made permanent full time but got rid of our current duty pattern
looks like the first one will be voted in going on word of mouth
a disgrace ( and I'm full time) feeling pretty despondent right now
your thoughts?

What future
the union are heavily in favour of keeping full time jobs, not least because part timers are less likely to join the CWU!

What future
There is approximately 70% of full timers in Royal Mail so yes the union is determined to protect full time jobs ! Why would they not ?
However part timers are important as well. Part timers are employed on a range of contact hours from Saturday only up to 37 hours !
The fact is that most new entrants are now part timers ! Over the last few months over 3000 mainly part time FTCs have been given a permanent contract. A further 3000 new entrants mainly part time have been employed by Royal Mail on a permanent contract
Over 800 part timers have been given an increase in hours with over 300 getting a full time contract !
Now the fact of the matter is that due to automation indoor work has decreased , whilst due to such things as increases in parcels , delivery to neighbour , door step scan etc outdoor time is increasing !
This is why in one part of Scotland they have agreed to increase a part timers hours by increasing their delivery span as there was not enough hours indoors to do so.
There has recently been a Joint commitment to review part timers hours over and above their contracted hours. There was a national conference call held by Sue Whalley and Ray ELLIS involving all Divisional reps and senior managers only yesterday to review this and the filling of vacancies !
It is important that when the review of part timers take place that it is too review the hours they work against the same workload each day above their hours and not say covering other duties etc ! Equally any agreed increase in part time hours should first be offered to most senior part timer in the office not necessarily the part timer performing the hours !
This work will commence over the next few weeks !
