leaving a special on the front seat and forgetting to lock the van door.

I haven't done it but my very good friend of 20yrs Royal Mail service left a 1pm on the front seat and left the van unlocked whilst dolivering a parcel today and was found out by the inspector that goes round checking the vans. Nothing been said as yet and its certainly 'potential' sacking but is it likely he will get a slap on the wrist as a first time?

it all depends on the situation, lots of variables to think about, if DOM looking to cut hours good way to get rid of a FT staff member, why was his van targeted? was there a tip off that he had been doing it regularly hence a targeted check, where was the van located busy town center or quite country road (ie different level of risk on security), how long was van unattended for, was it in plain site or under other mail(even if that other mail shouldnt have been there either) has there been other similar incidents in your office area(may want to make example of someone), does he have run ins with the dom?(easy way to get rid of trouble maker) whats his sick record like?(easy way to get rid of someone with poor record)

personally i think the most he will get if as you say its a first offence would be a suspended dismissal

Inspector was doing the rounds on a few vans. it was in town and was left whilst he went up a garden path to deliver a parcel,the van was outside the house he was delivering at. Never goes on sick and hes no trouble causer. Is it down to the DOM though or from above?

depends on whether the dom is dismissal trained or not, even if he is he may ask higher for advice, from what your saying there, a few things are in his favour and a few not so its not the worst of this type of offence but not the best either but it is at the lower end of the scale i would say

He should be ok. A guy at our office had a full tray of mail and a special stolen from the front of a van and survived. The van was locked and it was about 10 years ago but I still think it was worse than your mates situation.

I've locked the rear door on occasion not realising the front doors weren't locked (key fob doesn't work) but I never leave mail in the front. It is possible for you to think the mail is secure or 'secure enough' for your location and require retraining when you are proved wrong.

Workload is certainly getting heavier... but that's no reason to cut corners... or to get sloppy. Special Deliveries can often be high value items and SOP should always be followed.
