When i first transferred to my current DO in 2012 it seemed to run as a well oiled machine.

Cutting off was never heard of, the office itself was clean, moral although not high was acceptable & most duties were occupied with reserves given a good couple weeks notice on what they'd be doing and when their day off would fall.

Fast forward to 2016 and it's a shambles.

- the office is a state, empty crates, Yorks and old bands literally everywhere
- a good number of vacant duties
- PT staff doing FT duties on PT hours
- FT staff doing PT duties on FT hours
- Reserves not seeing next weeks duties until Saturday
- Kill off and Redirections left on frames to be done 'when there's time'
- Filthy vans, inside and out
- 10% of duties cut off, usually on duty holders day off resulting in arguments as no overtime is paid on excess work.

I could go on but I'd hate to bore you.

We had some new starters from Xmas and most cannot believe that THIS is the way Royal Mail is run.
Now I take pride in this company, my role and its history but feel absolutely embarrassed by this farcical we call our job now :(

Sounds typical, but I don't understand this bit.

Sorry, I'll elaborate.

The duties that cut off usually happen on the duty holders day off when the floater covers.
Mail gets brought back for the duty holder to come back to the following day. Before we'd be paid to deliver the additional bags whereas now it's a case of "it should make no difference delivering one or ten letters to an address". Basically, not prepared to pay OT

Why do these management feel they are above the law? Mail must be delivered, duties clearly go over on the day off because the duty holders all come in early and work for free

Not always the case. Sometimes a part timer is put onto a FT duty. Or, if it is the regular floater, they may not know of the regular safe places or which neighbours are usually in to take parcels.

But yes, sometimes some duty holders come in early, warping figures, thus making the round planned to fail

That is outrageous on so many levels.

The manager should have something in place to take care of anything left by cutting off THE SAME DAY. Leaving it for the duty holder the next day is ridiculous. Expecting the duty holder to deliver it AT ALL is ridiculous, never mind offering him overtime to do it.

The only arguing should be with the manager, not each other, it's all his fault.

I think you should all get together with the rep and go through the over-running procedure.

I hear what you're saying, but this is BS! It's just another well worn phrase from the DOMs BS Handbook. ;liar NP UK is correct, you should get your Local rep to clarify the Over Running Procedure, and get him to cover the Agreement concerning Lapsing/Absorption. If I can 2nd guess you (you're probably going to say the Local rep is useless) contact the Area Delivery Rep (Phone No. normally on a CWU notice board somewhere) and ask him to visit. This clarification should also be made with the DOM, not just the Posties.

The 3 "Golden Rules": 1) Overtime is NOT Compulsory 2) All Agreed Overtime must be paid for 3) Lapsing is not Compulsory (only to be done if it can be completed within your allocated time.

DOMs will get away with what you let them get away with. From personal experience when you get a different DOM the whole system can improve. Simply by the "New" DOM sticking to the agreements and not being driven by his own greed, and a desire to get as much Bonus in his pocket as possible. :no no Every hour ANYONE works for Free is simply putting Money in his pocket. Don't do it. :cuppa
