How much notice should I be given for a shift change?

Post by bergos »

Last week I was told by my office manager that my day off this week was going to be on the Wednesday, So thinking I would be off this Wednesday I made plans for my day off as anyone would. Anyway, get back to the office at the end of my shift today and my manager says he made a mistake and my day off is now Thursday and that I have no choice but to work Wednesday and have my day off Thursday (even though its not a day off for me now as I had agreed to work in the evening doing sorting work because I thought i was working the Thursday).

My question is, does the Royal Mail have a policy on how many days notice a person gets for a change of shift? I bought train tickets to go out for the day because it was my day off and I am very annoyed that my management doesn't even care that I made plans, nor even apologise for a mix up that wasn't even my fault, even implying my job could be at risk for speaking up on the matter.

When you were informed last week by your office manager that your day off would be Wednesday for W/c 11th January did the duty roster show this and if so you need to bring this to your manager's attention in the presence of your union rep as changing with 48 hours notice is an unreasonable request for you to make alternative arrangements. I think there is a ruling that 7 days notice is required for a change of shift but this may not be a hard and fast rule.
