knee surgery / ill health retirement?

"Hypothetical" situation.

Assuming that hypothetically one had been struggling on with a knee injury for the past few months, and had seen the consultant at the hospital recently.


Consultant recommends surgery (either keyhole, or open knee) due to the extent of the injury (torn cartilage behind the kneecap, and bruised kneecap - luckily ligaments and meniscal cartilage OK), which would mean 8 - 12 weeks recovery on crutches and with knee brace to limit bending of knee.


So is one hypothetically facing ill health retirement? I've only been in the job around 18 months! No sick leave taken yet, apart from 4 weeks indoor duties no long after initial injury.

Still to get a hypothetical date for the hypothetical surgery, waiting time ~ 8 - 12 weeks.

Advice welcomed before I discuss this with lino soon.

It's corrective surgery where you will recover so IHR shouldn't come into it.

You've got a good consultant , I had "Parrot-beak tear " to meniscus & tear to ACL due to twisting knee during dog attack. Had to waited 12 wks for surgery ( no light duties ) then 2 wks off post op then 2 wks light duties. RM wanted me back to full duties faster than that , so I think IHR is out the question.

Good to hear that IHR isn't likely! Now to wait for my appointment to see the magical wizard of knee!
