Government giving us 1% of their holding?

Post by jimmynailsalive »

The Government sees no policy reason to keep its remaining stake in Royal Mail. It also intends to gift up to 1% of the shares in Royal Mail to UK employees, subject to restrictions on sale, from the Government's remaining holding.
They have just under 150 million shares so £7.5m worth of shares to be split with us at some point in the future if I'm reading that correctly.

Is that another 60 odd quids worth then?

I thought there were about 135,000 employees so stab in the dark brought me to around 11 or 12 shares at a fiver each?

correct
Possible nataddick has calculated 1% of all shares in issue but I read it as 1% of the Government's remaining 15% holding that is just shy of 150 million shares so 1.5 million between 135,000.

The report from the mansion house speech said:
up to 1 percent more of Royal Mail's shares to staff
So I would say this means 1% of all shares - meaning 11% in total to us. So I think Nattadick has it right.

Hopefully someone, somewhere will tell us at some point. Although when it comes to being allowed to sell them, and if you're still employed it going to complicate things as there will be 3 or 4 dates you may need to keep track of.

Those 2 words mean a lot - UP TO 1% , so a fraction of 1. Bosses will turn it round as if theyre giving them to us and make us lapse more for it!

This is how it reads to me also. 1% of shares compared to 10% last time not 1% of the 15% they are offloading. :hmmmm

I know the press are not entirely reliable but the article in today's Daily Mail (see link) values a 1% stake in the company at up to £50 m which is 1% of the share capital not the remaining stake.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... s-off.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It also makes it clear that the Govt's remaining stake will be 14% i.e. 14% of the share capital. The 'up to' terminology was used last time when we had up to 10% share and yet we actually got 10%.

I rest my case - the 1% referred to in the speech simply means 1% from the remaining 15% not 1% of it

An extract from said speech and the press statement on GOV.UK

'Speaking last night, the Chancellor, George Osborne, said:

We want to help the Royal Mail attract more investment and serve its customers, and use the money we raise in return to pay down the national debt.

And we’re also going to make sure that there is a special bonus for the workforce who have done such a great job turning Royal Mail around.

Thanks to them, Royal Mail’s share price has risen; so we’re going to give more of the shares to the staff.

Building on the success of the initial scheme, and in recognition of their work in turning around the Royal Mail, the Chancellor announced last night that government intends to gift up to 1% of the shares of the company to Royal Mail’s UK employees. These shares will come from government’s remaining holding and they will be subject to sales restrictions.'

Could it be clearer............
