Shared Parental Leave

Parents can now legally share parental leave, because new regulations are now in effect. The legislation allows mothers or adopters to give up some of their maternity or adoption leave (up to 50 weeks) and statutory pay (up to 37 weeks) so that they and/or their partner can take the remaining leave as Shared Parental Leave.

Who can take Shared Parental Leave?

The regulations apply to employees whose babies are born, or children placed for adoption, on or after 5 April 2015. Working parents need to meet certain eligibility criteria. Details are available in the Shared Parental Leave policy.

How will it work?

Mothers/adopters can choose to reduce their maternity/adoption leave and statutory pay, so they can share the amount that is left with their partner as Shared Parental Leave.
Up to 50 weeks of the mother/adopter’s maternity/adoption leave and 37 weeks statutory pay can be shared.
The amount of leave and pay available to eligible parents will depend on how much maternity/adoption leave the mother/adopter takes.
Shared Parental Leave must be taken before the child’s first birthday/first anniversary of the placement for adoption.
Shared Parental Leave must be taken in blocks of a week, but can be requested to be taken in more than one block.
Up to three requests to take a period of Shared Parental Leave can be given.
At least eight weeks’ notice should be given before the start date of each period of Shared Parental Leave.
You can agree to work up to 20 ‘SPLIT’ (Shared Parental Leave in Touch) days during Shared Parental Leave.
Other changes

Adoption leave has become a day one right for adopters placed with a child from 5 April 2015.
Ordinary Parental Leave now applies to parents with children under the age of 18 (increased from under 5).
More information

More information, including eligibility requirements and details about how to apply are available in the Shared Parental Leave policy and guide. For more details, ask your manager for a copy. I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

This is very similar to the previous 'extra paternity leave'. When my wife went back to work after our first child 4 years ago I had the last 6 weeks of her leave.
