Stay vigilant during half-term holidays:Dogs

Half-term school holidays are underway in most areas of the country, meaning that the likelihood of dogs being outside is increased. We are urging all postmen and women to be extra vigilant this week, and be aware of the threat of dogs.

Last year* there were more than 3,300 dog attacks on our people. To help stay safe whilst on delivery, remember to:

Check that your walk-log is up to date
Where a dog is known to live at a property, write a ‘D’ on the top letter to that house
Use your posting peg
When delivering a parcel, take few steps back from the door. This is so that if there is a dog at the property, you are not seen as a threat.

If you are visiting an address where you know a dog is present, and the door is open, do not enter the property.

A question I have never been able to get an answer to. On our rounds, the places with the biggest threat from dogs and new open plan type estates. If the door is open the dog has access to the whole street. There is nowhere to go.

I have the same problem in parts of my duty and this is what I do.

1. Dog running free - contact the Line Manager and advise them - suspend delivery for that day for addresses you have to pass the dog to get to if its agressive or you feel threatened. The manager should contact the dog warden and they should patrol the area relatively quickly

2. Open door and dog known to be at address. Turn round, retreat and continue with delivery after endorsing the mail for that address appropriately. Advise manager if its a constant problem so that a letter can be sent to make the addressees aware of the problem.

However, if it is a constant problem then ask your manager to contact the Dog Warden, or even contact them yourself as a concerned citizen.

Our Dog Warden was laid off for our Council as a cost cutting exercise and you have to ring the Council and leave a message

The one I had was in a cul de sac, bastards used to open the door once I was in and couldn't get out again till they rescued me from their dog. They got a visit and it improved but every time they opened the door the poxy thing was out. I tried to hit it with my trolley once, would have preferred to hit them. They moved eventually and thankfully took the dog with them.
