The new Shared Parental Leave regulations have now come into effect. The legislation allows mothers or adopters to give up some of their maternity or adoption leave (up to 50 weeks) and statutory pay (up to 37 weeks) so that they and/or their partner can take the remaining leave as Shared Parental Leave.
Parents can choose to take leave:
At the same time while the mother/adopter is still on maternity/adoption leave; or
At the same time with both parents on Shared Parental Leave; or
Separately with one parent going back to work and the other taking Shared Parental Leave
The two types of Shared Parental Leave:
Continuous leave: You take the leave in one block, for example 20 consecutive weeks.
Discontinuous leave: You request to take the leave over two or more periods while going back to work in between.
