shin pain from HCT

Post by sophie97 »

This is the second seperate week I have been on a HCT walk and each time ive gotten a really sore shin muscle, could hardly walk by the end of it. Does anyone else get this pain from HCTs?

Does sound like shin splints. It's caused by ill fitting shoes or over-striding. I would presume as it's recent with the HCT its the latter.
You're LM might not like me saying this but if you slow down and walk as normal as possible with HCT then you should be okay.

I've has this from time to time, due to a football related injury (knee and shin)
One way of treating this is using a method known as R.I.C.E. - Physiotherapy related treatment
RICE is the acronym used for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. It is used as the best initial treatment of soft tissue injuries such as sprains, strains, and contusions. The combination of RICE helps reduce inflammation that occurs after acute injury. It is important to remember that the earlier this treatment is put into place, the more effective it is.

Rest:
Rest and protect the injured area. If it hurts to bear weight on the injury, use crutches, if it hurts to move the area immobilize it with a splint.

Ice:
Apply ice or a frozen object, such as a bag of corn, etc from the freezer, to the injury. The cold will reduce swelling and pain at the injured site. This step should be done as soon as possible. Apply the frozen object to the area for 20 minutes three times a day for the first 48 hours.

Compression:
Compress the injured site by applying an compression bandage. This will decreases swelling of the injured region. Although the wrap should be snug, make sure it is not too tight as this can cause numbness, tingling, or increased pain. (don't wear these for prolonged periods.. ie overnight in bed)

Elevation:

Elevate the injured area above the level of the heart as much as possible. This technique will also assist in reducing the amount of swelling to the injured site.

Another tip for you and not related to the above problem.
if you have any bruising and also to aid in the reduction of any swelling from injuries as well, use an ice pack or a pack of frozen peas, wrapped in a towel to stop any possible skin burn, and apply to the affected area for about 10mins and then use a hot towel, again for a few mins. Repeat a few times and this aids in making the blood vessels open and close and forces the blood to move through the affected area, this will help in reducing any swelling.
Far better than using sprays as these can be problematic for some people.

Just out of interest - are you wearing the Anvil trainers? I had the same pain on an HCT round after getting the Anvils. I ordered some YDS trainers. Problem solved! Now I just get bum ache when pushing the HCT up slopes. :)

You push the HCT up slopes with your bum?
I think your WPC was having a laugh when s/he trained you. :whistle
