Driver or walker . What do you prefer?

I worked as a driver and walker both personally prefer driving duty.

It depends,I prefer walking with my usual driver as he will come and help when he has done the big packets,some drivers just sit on there fat asses when it's a day without many parcels,if you work as a team it's a lot better.

Just remember if you go as a walker and you can drive you will get taken off your walk to cover someone else every frigging week!

Nice to do both. If you have both people who can drive, you can alternate days. You get variety and get to see all the people on your delivery instead of only half of them.

I'm a non driving walker right now. Depends on my partner as my loops are bigger but we tend to do the parcels together as he only beats me back by a few mins on most loops. My original partner is going to leave due to ill health and i've had 3 different partners do the round with me. One i will get back at the same time or before on most loops so he really does not have much time to either help me or do parcels. The 2nd one is quick ( i've seen him run a few times!) he won't help me but does get the stuff ready for the next loop and stuff plus we finish before I normally do with partner 1. The 3rd will get done before me on most loops and come and help me on mine which is cool, then we do the parcels together so get a little rest in between loops.

If i could drive right now it would be good as i could take over the main role and come in early to prep instead of being a porter (30 hour contact), would get the shorter loops but downside to this is i would most likely get a different walker everyday. Could see it being a pain once someone signs for the full time duty as we would both be drivers and I would most likely get moved as we seems short of drivers right now

Being the driver you get a bit of a sit down when driving between packets, however there is much more strain on your back . Walkers have to keep walking but don't have the stress of driving. I prefer driving but we should be paid more or have our clean driving records protected and recognised, i.e every 10,000 miles a medal! done 6600.

I believe 5plus has a point Chelsea Driving is a qualification, nowadays a very costly one, and RM basically get it for FREE. There used to be a driving allowance (Plus many others) but they were all done away with. Probably under the guise of simplifying pay matters, but I'm sure it was probably to save RM money.

We all know there's not two duties alike, and all Delivery Offices are different....and yet we're all doing the same amount,and type, of work? I don't think so. I believe a payment for Driving and possibly Flexibility (i.e Reserves) wouldn't be too much to ask. If there was a Financial Incentive to learn, and cover, additional duties it might shake some of the "Less Motivated" members out of their Lethargy. If the Reserves were getting a bit extra it might help them to accept the Buggering about that those Duties normally entail. I'm sure others will let us know their feelings on the subject.

I'm a driver being driven insane! Don't forget if we get robbed , hijacked or lose something including specials from the van then it's all on the drivers head.

Well i have done my changeover and am now sometimes put on as a driver,alot of the time i have no clue where i am going.It is more responsibility so i think there should be a bit more in our wages for it.Sometimes i regret doing the changeover life was so much simpler as a non driver.

In a lot of companies nowadays. Drivers seem to be the lowest paid. it's a skill that seems to go unrewarded.
Personally haven't had a chance to drive yet, so cant really comment on which I prefer, but I have noticed that quite a few of the (especially older) drivers are not very helpful at all. Someone needs to explain to them why there loops are a lot shorter. But I may have just been unlucky.
