Sick Procedure Question.
Had a problem overnight with an illness that I am covered by on DDA.
I rang the DO at 05:15 and told the early man ( gets in the yorks of mech, flats etc ) that I would not be in today due to my illness.
the DOM, rang my house phone at 06:45 ( it's downstairs so I did'nt hear it ) and of course he did'nt get an answer.
at 13:15 today the DOM knocked on my door stating that I should have contacted him about my illness, and would I be in tomorrow.
I told him that I told the early man at 05:15 and asked why he was at my house.
my question is, has he done everything by the book, or should he have not turned up at my house?
Just want to know for when I have my return to work etc.

No DIM would be welcome on my doorstep. That's what I call overstepping the mark. Were that to happen to me, I wouldn't waste no time in letting the weasel know.

Oh, I did.
I just want to know if he was right in coming to my house on day one of illness after I had informed the DO that I would not be in due to my sickness.

Had an area manager today tell us that on our first day of sick a manager would call at our house ,if we were not at home it would be a conduct issue !

I don't know if it is still the case but the requirement used to be that you phoned as close as possible to your normal start time and spoke to your own line manager. Leaving a message with someone else was not acceptable and if you did you could expect a call back from your own line manager.

Re: Sick Procedure Question.
Going by the book, you should definitely speak to your own manager, and tell them why you're off and how long you expect to be off. If it's likely to be more than a couple of days, you should AGREE how often and what form any contact will be. If you do all that, no manager has any right to come anywhere near your house for at least a couple of weeks, and even then, it has to be with your agreement.
That area berk should have a copy of the attendance agreement shoved up the same place where the monkey puts his nuts.

What if, as it was your first day sick, you had gone to the doctors?douggie68 wrote:Had an area manager today tell us that on our first day of sick a manager would call at our house ,if we were not at home it would be a conduct issue !

How does this work when OPG's are in at 0600 or 0630 and nothing resembling management has ever strolled through the door before 0730?Brain Fury wrote:I don't know if it is still the case but the requirement used to be that you phoned as close as possible to your normal start time and spoke to your own line manager. not trying to be awkward here but this is how it is in my office, no answerphone either, so no choice but to leave a message with someone else as early aas you can.
Pain in the arse when you leave A&E at 0330 knowing full well that you're not going to be in that day and not being to just leave a message and finally get some sleep!
no case to answer here, you were with the doctor, at the chemist, back of an ambulance etc.douggie68 wrote:Had an area manager today tell us that on our first day of sick a manager would call at our house ,if we were not at home it would be a conduct issue !

Re: Sick Procedure Question.
There are two seperate guidelines for sick absence notification, the first is that you should follow any local guidelines which should be conveyed in writing to the local staff, this is for situations where management may not be on the premises immediately prior to your shift start time, this can obviously include leaving a message with another member of staff.Brain Fury wrote:I don't know if it is still the case but the requirement used to be that you phoned as close as possible to your normal start time and spoke to your own line manager. The second is contained within Royal Mail's Sick Pay Conditions Policy which states Employees must notify the business as soon as possible if they are unable to work, and of their intention to resume. Ideally this should be before the start of duty, and must be no later than on the first day of absence.
All further contact should be by agreement by both parties and the only reason a manager would have for turning up on someone's doorstep uninvited would be if all other attempts to make contact had failed including sending out 1st and 2nd contact letters.
A manager turning up at your door on day 1 of an absence is an unjustifiable embarrasment and blatant intimidation.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

There is no requirement to be at home if off sick. Ask manager to show you were it states that in writing. He won't be able to.douggie68 wrote:Had an area manager today tell us that on our first day of sick a manager would call at our house ,if we were not at home it would be a conduct issue !
You could be at doctors, chemist,at supermarket buying food, especially if you live alone,or simply being looked after by a relative at their own property.

Re: Sick Procedure Question.
Indeed. I am also unaware of any law/rule which allows Royal mail to place any of us under virtual house arrest, especially when our only crime will be, having the temerity to be unfit for work.
