Can you apply for a duty over phone or does it have to be in writing , sure manager talked another postie in to having duty to stop me getting it because i do the job right with breaks , trolly , etc what are the rule on picking thanks

Well usually you fill out on paper if you want a duty and hand it in that's if it's just vacant duties out up for picking and not a full repick.

You apply in writing and if more than 1 applies, it then works on seniority.
However, the exception to that rule is, you must have been on your current duty for more than 12 months to be able to apply.
Unless that only applies to local agreement ?
The seniority though will always apply.

Not usually it's usually done in writing, to be done over the phone you'd need your dom to agree to it and process your application for you.

If you have difficulty with writing, explain this to your DOM (in private of course) and I'm sure he will write it for you.
But it must be done in writing so they can keep it on record.

When applying for a duty I would copy to union rep. Managers may file your letter in the wrong place

If you can't apply in writing ask your union rep to submit your interest or write a letter for you to sign.

you could just talk to the dom save a phone call

No you can't apply for a duty over the phone as there will be no visible evidence should there be a dispute as to how the duty was allocated and therefore must be in writing so if there is a disagreement as to how the postie received the duty it can be backed up.

THANKS ,THEY GAVE DUTY TO POSTIE WHO HADNT APPLIED IN WRITING AND AFTER DATE WAS UP , (I GOT OTHER MANAGER TO LOOK IN APPLICATIONS )SURE THEY WANTED HIM ON IT AND NOT MY MATE ,ILL GET HIM TO TALK TO UNION REP BUT ITS PROVING IT .

If the duty was up for grabs in a revision exercise then posties who are on annual leave or long term sick absence union rep in order to save time would have accepted a phone confirmation rather than detain the rest of the revision in these exceptional circumstances having already written to them for their duty preferences
If the duty was advertised as a single position the closing date for applying covers posties on annual leave entitlement and long term sick absence and in these circumstances a written application is necessary as there is sufficient time allocated for an application.
