TNT statement about redirections

Post by Bahia Feliz »

"Royal Mail has a monopoly over redirections data and we have been seeking access to this data for years, on reasonable terms. We hope that, in the near term, we will be able to reach agreement with Royal Mail so that this undesirable situation can be remedied.

In other words they want us to do all the work for them for the areas they deliver to!

No. They want access to the redirection information.
And it makes sense economic to share it with them.
Because if you aren't going to get all your mail redirected, what is the point of paying to get only some of it redirected?

People want their mail redirected when they move obviously,TNT didn't worry about small details like that when they started their own end to end service.
They should provide their own redirection service if they want to run their own delivery service.

I don't know but it happens anyway - there are local couriers who deliver to the likes of solicitors/estate agents who do not redirect. I don't know if it's national and the name escapes me. It's come back to me now it was Hayes.

However what's to stop them redirecting mail anyway, they just need to set up the same organisation we have. It isn't a restricted process at all they're just trying to cast blame on Royal Mail because they are too tight to invest in their own system.

Excuse me - but isn't redirection of mail a service that we sell, like special delivery, tracked, keepsafe etc ? If TNT want to use our service they should pay what we ask for it because it is NOT a monopoly. All they have to do is launch a similar service for their distribution depots which will probably replicate the utter balls up that everything else they have attempted has become. Sorry, but we are doing enough for them sorting out misdeliveries of mail and failed items being stuffed into our postboxes - let them grow up the hard way like Royal Mail did ... should take about 400 years

I take your point Clash about the recipient not wanting to have to arrange and pay for their redirection of mail with two different companies,
but we should at least be able to charge TNT a reasonable price for the privilege of accessing our data.

I'm guessing that we already sell them access to the PAF data, redirection data could be treated in the same way.

- - - and what about keepsafes? Will we have to advise TNT of the details? Otherwise we have a similar situation to the redirections.

Hmmm - just had a thought - if we sell them the info, how do they charge the customer if the customer hasn't specifically asked them to hold or redirect mail ... or do they give it back to us to do the redirection or keepsafe ?

They aren't expecting it for free.
I don't know how far apart the negotiators are but I'm sure if they called in the mediators and had a golden time they could reach an amicable solution.

All valid points but the sticking point is the price - I think.

TNT should have done this before we were privatised.

We no longer have a monopoly, they are our competitors, so sod them.

Let them set up their own system.

Unless, of course, Moya needs a new BMW, then let them have it for pennies.

This is just one reason why having more than one company delivering letters does not work for the customer at all. The customer who is moving house pays ROYAL MAIL for a redirection service - naturally thinking that it will be RM who will be delivering all the letters. What the customer does NOT know though is which company the sender is going to use to get their mail delivered. For example, if the customer has a mobile contract with Orange, would they be expecting TNT to deliver their monthly invoices? No, they would naturally be expecting RM to be delivering them so arranging a redirection service with another courier company would not enter their heads. Like everything else though, if no one complains to Ofcom then no one will listen.
