28 April 2014 is the first national CWU Youth Day.

It is the day when the whole union is encouraging young members to get more involved. The union’s policy making annual conference will be in session at the time and the day’s business will emphasise the vital, distinctive contribution made by young members, and the importance of recruiting even more young members and generating more young activists.

All of this must be seen in context: the CWU believes youth activism is not an optional add-on, but an essential component of a dynamic representative, forward-thinking union. It is also true that a union with no young members literally has no future.

This activity has a very clear purpose: the best way for young people to take control of their working lives is through stronger representative unions. And we use our collective power to achieve real improvements in the lives of not just our members, but for people in general.

In today’s fast-paced, never-stop, 24/7 society, we urge people to pause for just a second and think about the things we take for granted: freedom of expression, paid holidays, decent health & safety, a right to consultation, pay protection (albeit that the National Minimum Wage is far too low), equality and anti-discrimination legislation. All these things have been achieved by the collective action of trade unions. None of this would have been possible without them – without us – without you.
