In our branch we have no union representative.
I have approached and ask to support my workers by becoming the local branch representative.
My question is how do i apply and who do i apply to?

contact your local CWU area Secretary at http://www.cwu.org/cwu-branches.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to find yours.
let them know that you are happy to become the rep for your DO. and they will send through a letter that you will need to post in the DO stating that you wish to become the Rep.
if no one else comes forward you will get the post :)
I myself have only been a rep for a few months and as of yet have received no formal training ( but have got some upcoming ).

apply to your branch. look on the cwu website, see what branch your workplace comes under. I e if you were in bury st edmunds you come under Suffolk amalgamated branch . then ring the branch sec and go from there. all the best.

I did'nt take on the post for the pro's and Con's.
I took the post on because we needed a rep in our DO that would stand up to the management and stand up for the individual postie when needed, I have given some of my own time for free when it has been needed and I don't begrudge anyone asking me for advice etc even when my daily hours are done.
if you need to think about Pro's and Cons then perhaps it's not the thing for you. :)

The Cons:
The managers will hate you.
The staff will hate you.
They will try and bribe you and if unsuccessful will try and sack you.
It will take up all your time and energy.
You will be stressed morning, noon and night.
The Pros:
I'll get back to you when I think of one.........

Pride? You have to learn to swallow it.
The pro would be that every now and again there will be a look on your manager's face when he realises he has been caught out making up s**t.
It makes up for all the crap.
And sometimes a member will say thank you for your help.

be prepared to be hated by a good potential of lads who TALK THE TALK but don't WALK THE WALK, for example using trolleys ,taking breaks, starting on your time. We are all in this together but it doesn't affect me. Hey ho you reap what you sow

I did it for a while and it can be the most rewarding of things to do.
but I found it was not the mangers that got me down but a handful of staff that killed it for me
