Royal Mail changes anger Alexandria residents

CHANGES are underway to the way mail is delivered to homes in the Vale. New delivery methods and revised delivery routes were introduced on a phased basis earlier this month.

The changes - aimed at modernising the way Royal Mail operates in the G83 postcode - will also maintain its services and keep prices as low as possible.

With fewer letters now being posted every day Royal Mail is organising its delivery routes up and down the country to be as efficient as possible.

The company is also investing in new equipment as more larger items are posted, in order to carry these to customers more securely.
In Alexandria, Royal Mail will continue to deliver in the morning and for a longer period during they day, with many customers continuing to get their mail by lunchtime.

The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the new delivery route - this may be later or possibly earlier than current delivery times.

Gerry McAuley, Royal Mail's delivery director, told the Reporter: "We are proud of the high regard in which our postmen and women are held in the Alexandria G83 postcode area. The changes to delivery routes will mean that a member of our local and experienced team will still be delivering to our customers in these areas."

However, West of Scotland MSP Stuart McMillan has written to Mr McAuley after several of his constituents expressed their concerns. He said: "I have been contacted by constituents, in the Alexandria area, who have received a letter from Royal Mail indicating changes to the service they receive. My constituents are concerned over when they may receive their mail in the future and also whether this is purely cost cutting and service reduction in advance of privatisation. Therefore, I have written to Royal Mail Group asking what steps they are taking to ensure residents in Alexandria will not be receiving a 'second class' service in the future."
