I myself lost my father in law to cancer a few weeks ago, my Dom paid me for 3 days special leave ( which was very good of him to do so ) and I then took another week on unpaid special leave, then got 1 day paid for the funeral ( which is all you are entitled to )

if you go sick and your Dom finds out that you are not sick you could get into more trouble than it is worth.

just do what I did, take the time you need off but don't get paid, I know it's a horrible time for you at the moment, but Money counts for nothing when it comes to comforting your wife etc.

my condolences to your yourself, your wife and famly

is 3 days paid leave compulsory, or is it at the doms discretion

Very sorry to hear your sad news. I've been there. Not good times.

Would also like to know, is the special leave under these circumastances at the doms discretion?

you are entitled to one days paid leave for a non blood relatives funeral ( Mother in law, sister in law etc )

I was lucky in that my dom paid me for 3 days but he did'nt have to.

special leave can be taken at anytime although it will almost always be unpaid and as far as I know it can be for as long as you want ( or can survive unpaid )

Our dom mkaes out he's doing a favour by giving a days special leave for the above. So basically he hasn't got a choice in the matter.

The way I read it is if you are making the funeral arrangements you are entitled to 3 days paid special leave.

My condolences in what must be a traumatic time for you and your family. Quite often when in this type of position people find that the whole process leads it self to medical issues developing due to the stress involved so please be aware to take care of your own health and it may be worth paying a visit to your own GP and explaining your domestic situation at the moment as they would be in a far better position to ascertain how this issue is effecting you. It is not unheard of to be diagnosed with "domestic stress" which may ease the burden on yourself with being able to concentrate on issues at home first and to have a short break from work. Good luck.
