Performance pressure
I write to you with grave concern regarding the union’s position on performance issues.
This indeed does relate to prep times.
Our office is in the middle of the first half of the new working agreement, a lot of problems have arisen over getting finished on our time and the thorny issue of performance standards has been brought up.
Worst of all, I am told the union has agreed to these performance timings.
I am by no means the fastest postman, but neither do I feel I am slow. However under these new prep times that is exactly what I am being told.
This does wonders for my morale as you can imagine!
I am feeling under pressure. Could you please clear this worrying issue up for everyone?

replies:
The tools we have agreed with Royal Mail for delivery offices are not designed to be used for individual performance.
There is a separate national agreement that covers this - Royal Mail Individual Performance Standards - and any other type of approach is not agreed with the CWU.
If management persist in using anything else, then a disagreement should be registered in the office to prevent this. The agreed tool is the IWT and this tool is about office performance not individual performance. I should also make it clear that the CWU has not agreed to 100BSI in the Business Transformation: 2010 And Beyond agreement or as part of the IWT. Indoor performance is determined in line with the Setting Indoor Performance
agreement. Also, the prep time will be affected by the volume of walk-sequenced mail you receive and the mix of mail you receive - i.e. letters, flats and packets - and whether you have one address per slot or two addresses per slot, assuming you are working on an RM2000 frame, and whether that is a standard frame.
So there are a number of influencing factors at play. It is not as simple as some people who have never performed a delivery in their life would like to make out.
If you are coming under pressure, then make your rep aware. In your case I have forwarded your letter to your area delivery rep so that he can offer you assistance.
