I have only recently became a postie and have been in the job just over a month. 3 shifts ago I started to gain the effects of shin splints in the lower left leg. These symptons got worse over the next two shifts to the point I was struggling to walk. I was put in the office for the day on Saturday 6th April 2013 so I was wasnt out walking and making my leg any worse. I was told by the branch manager that, and I quote, "if your legs not better by Monday (8th April) youl have to go off on the sick as Iv nothing for you to do in the office"
Due to me still being in my probabtion I wont get paid for being of sick and I have a young family to look after so being off isnt an option but more importantly being off will affect my probation aswell.
I need to know if:
1. Can he force me to be of on the sick and
2. What can I do?
Any help would greatly be appreciated,
Thanks,
Mark

Sorry I can't answer the part about being sent home.
I suffer with Shin Splints in my right leg so know what you are going through. Do you have any anti inflammatory medication you can take like diclofenac? Also make sure you are wearing suitable footwear, stay hydrated and if possible get some sort of support around the area like tubigrip.

So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet

Re: Info regarding what to do?
I also suffer with Shin Splints, although I mainly get them after a few days off.
what you need to do is warm up your calf muscle before you start out, I step onto a kerb and stretch my calf muscle by bouncing slowly trying to get my heel to touch the floor, do this for approx 10 times, then leave it 20 seconds and do another ten.
build up your speed slowly as well, I find that using Paraceatemol or nurofen etc help a lot, but if I have been working the day before it's usually fine as the muscle is still stretched enough from the day before.
it will get easier as well, the more you use your leg, it's not used to the stress you are putting it under atm, but it will.
hope the above helps

well yes if your are not fit for duty he can send you home.
yes it will affect your probation, but if hes a decent DOM and your not sick a lot then it should be fine.
Why dont you use some annual leave instead and take a rest?

There's quite a number of proprietary fixes on Amazon in the form of supports - when I was on delivery and had problem with my knee I used one for some time and although it was uncomfortable at times it worked to a degree.
