Local posties given new delivery routes in ‘efficient and modern’ move

ROYAL Mail customers in Mid-Ulster could be receiving their post later than usual after postmen and women were given new delivery routes.

The changes, which Royal Mail says will ‘modernise’ the service as well as making it more “efficient”, will also see posties sharing vans on postal runs.

Town and village based postal workers will also be given a new ‘high capacity’ trolley which Royal Mail says will hold bigger parcels and more post.

The changes took effect from Monday (January 28th) and are set to impact on postal code areas across Mid-Ulster in the UK wide move. Letters have been sent to to households advising them of the change.

In a statement Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail provides one of the most comprehensive and best value mail services in the world.

“Our postmen and women play a vital role in Cookstown, as well as across the rest of the UK, where we deliver to almost 29 million addresses, six days a week.

“However, we need to modernise the way we operate. We are therefore making changes in Cookstown to maintain our services and to keep our prices as low as possible.”

The statement added: “The way in which we communicate with each other has changed dramatically.

“Unfortunately, fewer letters are now posted every day and Royal Mail needs to organise its delivery routes to be as efficient as possible.

“We also deliver more larger items and so we are investing in new equipment to carry these items to customers even more securely,” it said.

“The new equipment also reduces the risk of injury to our postmen and women from carrying heavier mail bags.”

Royal Mail said it will continue to deliver in the morning and for a “longer period during the day”.

“Many customers will continue to get their mail by lunchtime,” they said.

“The time customers receive mail will depend on where they live on the new delivery route. This may be later or possibly earlier than current delivery times.”

“When mail volumes vary, we may need to adjust delivery arrangements and times.”

The statement concluded: “These changes will require a period of adjustment for staff. However, Royal Mail will be doing everything possible to maintain a high level of service and thanks customers for their understanding.”

And so, the service in Ulster takes a turn for the very worst, just like my area, and many more besides.
