Put down sick for my day off - Please help

I have been trying to resolve an issue with my line manager on and off for over a year now.

On the afternoon of Tuesday 21/06/11 i was bitten by a dog while out running on the local cycle path, it was my day off on the Wednesday 22/06/11 which i agreed to work as OT, but after being bitten and receiving medical treatment that afternoon i phoned the DO to say what had happened and that i would rather rest and take my day off to recover and i would be back on the Thursday. I came back to work Thursday and completed my full duty and completed my full 40hr contracted week, my duty was covered on OT by someone else on the Wed 22/06/11.

I later found out that my line manager put me down sick for this day? he knew this was my day off because his was the same day. I spoke to him about this and asked what was going on? he said that he would do something about it? but after numerous occasions asking for his help to sort what i feel is extremely unfair - also after finding out others in the office have called in to say they could not cover their day off and were not put sick, he has done nothing. Asked him to contact Sheffield for the day to be removed couple weeks ago and said - ye will do it / going to do it, but nothing. Im at end of my tether with this, feel like im banging head against brick wall. Extremely stressed as this day has contributed to a Stage 3 trigger also. Put a grievance in about line manager on Monday and DOM sent it to Area Manager, waiting for word back?

Would appreciate help please.

in our office you would have got an overtime ban for blowing out your rest day,cant see how you can be done for going sick.I am sure it will be resolved is your rep doing enough ?

Did the line manager PAY you for the day you were off in OT? Remember rest days are unpaid.

Can't have it both ways.

Triggered a stage 3? Looks like you'll not be issued with it as long as you put in a greavence before hand (and even then you are looking good).

Don't be stressed, it's easily proved that they f****d up so why worry?

I wasnt payed for my day off as i never claimed for it, i never worked it so would never claim for it. Showed my office rep a copy of the grievance before it was submitted to the area manager on Monday, have not heard anything back yet? Im off on winter leave and back Monday, cant say i have enjoyed being off with all this hanging over me.

It was questions rhetorically directly at your manager, not you. Sorry if it sounded wrong.

You were not paid so therefore Royal Mail cannot place it as time lost on your sick record as there was no time lost. End of. No stage three trigger, nothing, nada.

Honestly you should not worry.

1) you can't change anything right now
2) if what you state is correct, well, it's an open and shut case
3) always CC a copy of any complaint to Royal Mail HR as well.
4) email justsayit@royalmail.com if you continue to have problems, people say it does work.

Thanks for the helpful replies, i have sent a copy of my grievance to HR at Sheffield on the H1 form today, i hope they can help sort this out?

I cant help but worry about this until something is done.

The more and more you read stories like this - just where do RM get their managers from?

Don't worry - it was your day off. Do you possibly still have the wage slip for that week. If so - it will show you completed your 'contracted' hours however that may be. Whatever contract you are on you will have completed your hours, your day off as already mentioned is unpaid. As you will have worked your hours over 5 days.

Next time you get shown for any overtime on your day off. And you cannot perform the overtime. Simply call and say you cannot perform this overtime. End off. Simple as that. It will be classed as pressure overtime not scheduled so you can hand it back. And if this 'manager' tried to impose a ban. So what. At least you will have nothing to worry about.

Don't worry about this. You did nothing wrong. And above all else. Proceed with the HR1. This story beggars belief. No wonder I've never come across a case of any RM managers being headhunted to work in private industry. This manager is an idiot.

I did my contracted 40hrs that week = 5 x 8hrs on Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri, Sat.

The line manager used to be a postie and has been at RM around 25+ years, quite a few people in the office think he is not up to the extra responsibility and cant do the job properly, a few times ive went in to see him about one thing or another he's been on the Celtic FC web page?

Trying to get a day off for a wedding in May was ridiculous - asked in early March and 2 weeks of asking him to see about the day, had to eventually go over his head and ask the DOM - who gave me an answer that day.

I dont know why he has to be like this with some in the office and others he is either best friends with or is scared to confront them? It seems the more you do for him the more he takes the p%ss out you, i hardly ever turn down OT and have offered to come in early to parcels and prep in past where some point blank cut off leaving streets of mail in frames - and get treated like gods by him? WTF?
