the ongoing Dissagreement! - whats our objectives now?

Post by Picket »

hi all - to those who know more than me (which will eclude practically no-one) about the recent disscussions which came to no end!

the first wave of strikes worked! they got RM back to the table - but what are the realistic objectives for us now?

Yes i agree with IA - but to maintain support throughout the members we surely have to be clear what our aim is and how realistic that it is?

Crozier was on 5 - live radio yesterday he said he'd asked the executive commitee of the Union to put forward their proposals for a fairer way forward and he said 2 weeks on he had heard nothing!

yes their proposals are far too extreme but do we have any alternatives? - at the end of the day if we believe their out to run RM into the ground then its up to us to protect the future of RM and its workers by coming up with realistic proposals that will get both the regulator and the gov.t on side!

Well you do have a partially valid point - the delay the CWU quoted was for them to come up with new proposals and the next thing we hear from HQ is the strike dates.

Did they come up with any proposals? If they did, what were they? Are we going to be brought into the "circle of friends" or are we just cannon fodder?

We'll be losing £120 a week for the initial strikes - will Billy and his cronies be donating the same amount to charity? And by that I don't mean the Labour Party.

1) It does not matter what the reguator thinks, they will never be on our side as they say that they are there to look after the interests of the customer, although that thought you could have some very serious debate about.

2) Stuff the government, they are supposed to be there for the electorate (haha), anyway we have the ultimate say as we decide who remains in government, the vote is mightier than the sword.!!! :cfo :lfo

I'm not wavering mylegs, but the days of blindly "going over the top" are long gone.

I want answers!

Why discuss proposals that were blatantly unacceptable to the membership for 5 weeks?

Why delay industrial action for so long after the talks broke down?

Why were the leadership at the TUC when their primary role is to run this union?

Why are we supporting the Labour Party and attending the conference when they are clearly NOT supporting us?

What are we doing to publicise the reasons for the action? I don't think I have seen a single version by the media that accurately portrays the reasons why we are taking industrial action.

What proposals were put forward to RM?

Will Dave Ward continue to serve on the TUC section of the Labour Party NEC?

Have no doubts I will be on the picket line but eventually the piper is going to be counting the cost.

I'm with you there mate! I'm sick of the cozy deals that go on at the top as though it's all nothing to do with us.

I don't want to labour a point but sad bastard that I am I read the CWU Annual Report for 2006/7. If anyone has the time or inclination take a look - it's absolutely riveting. Youth, Women, Gay, Lesbian, Education, Conferences, Ethnic minorities, but nothing at all to do with the ordinary postie, pay deals, working practices. It is all to do with making the union like a friendly society and not a fighting machine. What would they do without our money?

As for pushing the Youth aspect and education - there won't be enough union members left to fill a classroom.

No, the role of this union, of any union , is to protect it's members from parasites like Leighton & Crozier, not do their jobs for them. This is where the
union gets stuck, it cannot protect it's members and help RM introduce unnecessary major change at the same time.

Then that is what it should have told Royal Mail and the membership and not, as they always do, try to be all things to all men.

I remember some years ago when the CWU sent us out a load of stuff telling us they were negotiating a deal with some insurance firm or other. I sent it to HQ and asked them why they were selling insurance instead of fighting for our rights. As for the rest of it, well, if another worker is gay or lesbian, it's no business of mine, but I can see where they are a special case when it comes to them being bullied or harrassed, so I can see why any union have to look out for them. Same for ethnic minority workers. But, it's high time the union started to engage with the membership on issues which affect us all. We don't even get that in the middle of a dispute. The CWU is writing to members next week, which is great, but as a member, I want to be informed about what is going on. That should be for the union to do. All I can say is thank goodness for this site. Without it, we'd be lost.

It's how some people advance up the CWU Ladder i.e. Sit on Everything , lots of hand -wringing , making excuses for abysmal management , trying to calm people down so they won't make waves . There's Youth Officers , Representatives then all the right -on causes and talking shops , they're not representing you ;they're playing politics instead The best example is the anti-facist cause if you keep going on about the BNP , idiots will join them . You are all supposed to be paying for bread & butter stuff whilst these wannabe busy-bodies are on junkets , in nice hotels playing 6th Form Politics trying to save the world . Others wouldn't put it so delicately , they talk of collusion and reps being full of ***t and sitting on things as they are frightened of the controversy . .

I agree. Our union must move away from this, "We understand there needs to be change", s**t. As long as they go down that path, they'll only ever
be viewed by parasitical privateers like the two pratts we have now, as willing partners in the inevitable destruction of our members jobs, terms and
conditions, and not forgetting our pensions, as RM pursues phantom competitors in a phantom market. :cool
