Holding mail

Hi,if a customer is away for a while and asks you to leave the mail till he returns does he have to go through this officially or can we just hold onto it till he returns.I ask because being the cover for various duties i accidently posted mail that was being kept in the frame because the customer was on holiday.When the duty holder came back he had a right go at me even though he had written on a bit of paper to keep the mail,hardly visable.

Only hold the mail if it's official.............otherwise you're quite correct to just deliver it (wouldn't want to be done for wilful delay).

"Officialy there should be a keepsafe or it could be considered that the mail is being "willfully delayed".

Unofficialy if you have been on a walk for a long time then you only want take care of your customer and don't mind doing them a favour.

If I was reserve on this walk I would just bring it to the line managers attention and OK it with them.

There is absolutely no way you could unofficially decide to hold a customer's mail for them while they were on holiday.
Royal Mail has an official service for that - you can't just decide to do it - even if you've been on the walk for 1 000 years.

What next - offering free redirections?
Or cancelling surcharges?

If your office gets audited and they find a pile of mail on your frame with no official justification your manager will get screwed,they will not take this well because the audit comes with a paper trail that will end up on the desk of his/her manager and that's bad because your manager will obviously protect him/herself first,deny all knowledge of this practice and promise to deal most severely with the offender.
That will be the OPG f****d then.

seriously.... why in the hell would you want to risk your job for doing someone a favor. Royal Mail will have your ass on the line if they catch you so I say again why risk it.

Cost doesn't matter, not allowed to do it, unless dom okay ed it

OK everything with the DOM 1st
make sure you have a witness as 9 times out of ten he will say no
Dont ask him on his own because he will only deny it whatever he says
