Any Compensation for Dog Bites Through Letterbox?

Hi all, I’ve worked for Royal Mail for nearly 18 years without being bitten that was until last Saturday .I was on my own walk and delivering to an house with known dogs (Jack Russell & Rottweiler) at the address which are also listed in the walk log as a hazard. In lapse in concentration my fingers went too far through the letter box and one of the ****ers bit my middle finger. My finger looked pretty bad with a V shape flesh tear ,luckily my wife was able to pick me up and take me to the hospital. Got my finger flushed out with iodine and bandaged up and dosed with Anti Biotics . Ive been back twice to hospital to check for infection. One week later my finger is still swollen,numb and have visit hospital again on Monday. Iam on annual leave next week and this incident has really put a damper on my plans.
Reporting the attack and taking to management they are basically saying its my own fault and I could be taken down the conduct code. Yes, Royal Mail have themselves covered with their red delivery peg.
Does anyone know of any compensation scheme Royal Mail maybe hiding or would I need to take civil action against the dog owner.

Seriously? I doubt it. It's a human error not a conduct issue. Any rep should field this one easy enough.

If you've been told not to put your fingers through a letter box and/or if the frame has a dog warning card on it and the WRAP/Walk log is up to date then putting your fingers through the letter box isn't human error - it's plain dumb.

It has nothing to do with trespassing mate, we have a right to be there. It has to do with a having a dog in a public/private place though. The law is changing in that regard however.

The dog could be sat outside as long as it is in the householders area the dogs nuisance laws would make it difficult to claim - inside or outside it's irrelevant. As for sticking your fingers through the letterbox you might be 'technically' correct but it's a pretty low defence.

Is it that difficult to train dogs correctly or fit a cage around the letterbox? If someone does not notify the cover or the walk logs are not kept up to date or, yes clash, you do have a moments lapse in concentration, this is what is waiting for us from a few lovely customers who cant be assed to do anything at all (other than video and stick on youtube the 'funny moment').

who may i ask told you that

rm said it was classed as tresspass when you,re fingers go through, and i inquired via a claims company to see if i had a valid claim. they wouldnt entertain it.
