I'm working soon in Leeds and been told to provide my own business insurance which is rather expensive considering I'm under 21. In fact my current insurer will not provide it and are reviewing my case to see if they can do anything, if they say no is there anything I can do?
I am not working in delieveries. I shall be travelling to various MC and DO's in W.Yorks

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Business Insurance
What exactly are they asking you to do that they think will require you to have business insurance?

You do not need cover from your own insurance company for business use, you are covered by RM 3rd party business policy

3rd party would not cover damage to YOUR vehicle.
Perhaps, Class 1 use (most insurers would allow this for a postie without requiring an additional premium) would suffice in that it allows travel to and from various places of employment (excluding commercial travelling, use for hire and reward).

Re: Business Insurance
class 1 doesnt let you carry mail in your vehicle, also there would be an issue as you would be covered by royal mails policy at same time and you cant have two insurance policys covering youBaggaz wrote:RM 3rd party business policy...?zx135 wrote:spen wrote:if your not on deliveries, and your only commuting to a place of work surely you dont need buisness insuarance

Royal Mail Private Cars on Delivery Conditions of Use
1. Applications for Permission
In order to apply for permission to use their private car on delivery an employee must initially produce to their manager, the following:
This procedure will allow usage of private cars not soleley owned by the Delivery OPG, but owned by a partner or close family member, proof of this ownership can be marriage certificate or joint bank account statement or a utility bill that shows both parties at the same address.
. Their car registration document
. Their current valid driving licence.
. Their current valid certificate of insurance covering the car.
. A completed letter notifying their own insurers that they intend to use Royal Mail’s business policy whilst driving on delivery
. If they are not the registered keeper then clear evidence that the owner is either their domestic partner or another close family member
. A completed signed declaration of intent relating to the car to be used on delivery
. A current valid MOT certficate for the car to be used on delivery where the car to be used requires one by law
. The car for an initial visual inspection
1. Line Managers Actions
Following initial application and before authorising the use of a private car for use on delivery, line managers must undertake the following:
. Work Equipment Standard Risk Assessment (form WE STD5) section 3 and ensure the applicant completes section 4. This form is available on the Private Cars On Delivery Intranet site..
. Ensure Manual Handling in Delivery Work document MH12 has been completed and/or updated as applicable to specifically cover the transfer and lifting of a delivery pouch in
and out of the car boot where authorisation for the use of the car on delivery work is being sought. This form is available from the private cars on Delivery Intranet site.
1. Employee Obligations once Permission has been Granted
Once permission has been granted it is the employee’s obligation to ensure at all times that:
. He/she only uses the car when in possession of a valid driving licence
. He/she has a valid certificate of insurance to meet their liability to third party insurance claims
. Where he/she does not own the vehicle that it remains the property of his/her domestic partner or another close family member
. He/she ensures (and can produce evidence if required) that his/her insurer has been notified that the car is being used for business use and is covered by Royal Mail’s Business Policy. It is the employees responsibility to ensure this is acceptable to their insurers.
. He/she has a current MOT test certificate for the car, if required by law.
. The car is maintained in a roadworthy condition and is available for inspection.
. He/she must show all the above documents for inspection as required
. Where any of the above documentation expires between inspections he/she produces new documenation for inspection by his / her line manager within a week of expiry
. All delivery work is performed in accordance with duty content (ie in respect of route, timings etc).
. When the car is used in connection with delivery work, the only passengers permitted to be carried are other delivery employees on authorised delivery duties who are being dropped off at a delivery route adjacent to the driver’s delivery route.
. Normal security of mail applies (i.e. any “supplementary pouches” mail left in a car whilst the employee is making the delivery, must be out of sight in the boot or if a hatchback/estate, under the parcel shelf of the car. If a hatchback/estate has no parcel shelf, then the car must be deemed unsuitable. The car must be fully locked and alarmed – where an alarm is fitted).
. Exceptionally, as part of a contingency plan addressing any high crime risk, you may be advised of limits on the number of pouches you can convey in your car. This contingency is mandatory for the duration specified by your Manager.

Dear Sir/Madam
As part of my duties as a postman/woman, I have now voluntarily agreed to use my private car (registration number)_______________________
to convey me to and from the first point on my delivery and should I have to move the car from the first delievry point along the delivery route, as specified by the Delivery Manager and in accordance with the instructions given by the Delivery Manager as to those deliveries.
This agreement will exist until such time as Royal Mail or I decide that it will cease.
Royal Mail has confirmed that Royal Mail Group insurance arrangements covering damage, loss or injury arising from use of its vehicles on the highway - will now extend to damage, loss or injury arising from use of my own car on the highway while it is being used on Royal Mail business to and from the first point on my delivery and should I have to move the car from the first delivery point along the delivery route. This cover is for Third Party only.
I am writing to let you know that my car is now being used on Royal Mail business, as you are the insurer of my own car for domestic and pleasure use I enclose a letter from Royal Mail’s insurer, Chartris Insurance (UK) Limited, explaining the policy.
Should you have any questions about this, please could you reply to me by return and I will forward to the appropriate Royal Mail manager for a response.
Yours faithfully

Re: Business Insurance
Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I shall have to travel to delivery offices to meet with the managers there, not to carry mail.
