Managers working

Joking aside, we as OPG's have the 'need to save costs' and the 'flexibility' card rammed down our throats daily YET once our office have gone out we have a number of managers left in the office doing basically sod all. Last week I heard a manager laughing at the thought that they should take mail out if a walk can't be covered.

Has this double standard ever been tackled? i.e management over staffing and refusal to be flexible and take out mail etc when needed?

They should make most of the LM's part time. We've 6 LM's, did have 7 but one got EVR the other week and 1 DOM. There is no need for them all to be sat in the office. RM would save a fortune just by having the DOM and 2 LM's full time and make the rest part time. I walked into the office the other week when everyone had gone out, they were all sat there gossiping except one who was sat in front of the PC watching Mrs Browns Boys on the iPlayer

and there has been a flyer going round our office that they need to train up MORE managers so anyone who fancies it can apply!

Managers doing work not proper to their role, which doing postal work is, actually takes workload away from CWU members and if it becomes common practice can restrict earnings when used to cover unplanned peaks (or absences) or reduce either FT or PT jobs when used to cover model week workload when absence is within target. Their role is simply to manage and whilst there are managers who don't mind getting their hands dirty they should, in my opinion, stick to their own core tasks.

As things progress you will find more and more 'Team Leader' type roles ... which RM will see as a cost effective way of managing staff whilst at the same time getting some manual work processed without the cost implication of a ML graded individual. This has already started in Mail Centres and with CSS teams and can work for smaller groups. There have been problems with Team Leaders however as they can easily become mini-managers in their own eyes (trust me I have seen it) and cause some resentment from the staff they are working with.

once we get privatized the managers will not last long. too many doing very little for the majority of the day. its criminal really what they get paid for what they do with so many people out of work who would graft allday for half of what they earn.

A large portion of RM money goes into these useless lumps, a bit of work (or should that be bullying) in a morning then as soon as everyone is out the coffee is out the games/papers/net is in action.
They claim there is work to be done but nowhere near enough to justify their existence.

Considering there has been a drop in our numbers it is strange that management hasn't fallen to the same degree.. Their day will come!

My office has about 50 staff and 'only' one manager and yet he still does bugger all. DOM support does all the office work and rep covers all the deliveries and runs the office basicly. DOM then goes home as soon as all the deliveries have gone out, sometimes even earlier

We have just 1 manager and he preps a complete round for someone daily so he doesn't have to pay someone else to do it

Over the years our office has seen less mail (allegedly) , less staff (certainly) and an increase in the ratio of part time to full time staff. Despite this creating less people, hours and mail to manage, there has not been one cut in the management levels. Royal Mail are deliberatley missing out on some quite sumptuous savings to protect their little foot soldiers. After all, RM exists not to serve customers or the uniformed grades, it exists to provide a well paid playtime for feckless bullies who are in "the clique". Or so it seems...

Moya stated in front of the Commons Select Committee that 2,400 managerial positions would go by the end of this year.
